So what's the plan? Just bailing, or going with that business idea you had?

Going with the business idea. We signed our lease last night. I'll finish this month at my current job and start our build out next month.

Basically, I operate within this rule: Everyone is replaceable. The question is, how much is it really going to cost to replace you?

It's not just commission, it's hiring, training, replacement, relationships with clients, corporate/product knowledge, benefits and payroll taxes, risk, etc.

One thing I have learned while working at Big Corporate IT is that you become less replaceable simply by your knowledge of general systems in the company. I started in QA as a developer designing automated tools for the tard manual testers. I work at GM.

But doing that allowed me to interact with every level of tons of enterprise systems and I gained a lot of skills across many platforms. Sometimes a lot of older WTF tech that I've never heard of... but is used for insanely critical processes in the company. That's where you get the careerist do nothings (now) that they keep around JUST to fix problems with a technology that was popular for maybe a year back in 90s or something and nobody knows how it works (HI NARROW CAST lol).

Later on it helped me in designing some reporting tools that led to my current architecture position and now several departments are utterly dependent on a system I created and maintain during my innovation time allotments. This would guaranteed collapse if I was replaced. Just due to the nature of development it would take several months just for the guys to replaced me to figure out all the moving pieces.

I used to wonder how such critical things end up being that way. Yet here I am with a shadow IT homebrew setup running two organizations within a Fortune 10.

That's even with the documentation I put together.

Everyone is replaceable. Everyone. Everyone also thinks they are irreplaceable. But you are. The world will keep turning the business will keep making money. Someone will learn your irreplaceable skillset in a week.

Everyone is replaceable, just some people carry a far greater cost to replace than others. I'd say my last two jobs I was in a very niche role and was expensive to replace.

Yeah, but the attitude here doesn't reflect that. Some dude down the hall has been here 20 years or so like I said. His sole experience and expertise is to deal with narrow cast server related shit.

Of course everyone is replaceable. Its just the matter of your expense to replace that person. You become less replaceable the more shit you know.

So can you tell us what the business idea is yet?

I've been researching and working towards this for some time now, and it sounds odd when I tell some people, but I'm opening up an Escape Room. I hope to have four different room themes going when we open with six being the final goal, or being able to have future rooms have multiple stages/rooms.

Applied to dev position yesterday. Got contacted today to schedule an interview for Monday. Agency is ~30-40 people, seems to have good work/life balance, lists ping pong skills as a bonus. Glassdoor reviews are all 4+ and seem positive. Also spotted a former coworker from my last agency in the company videos, seems like a good "in."

Don't wanna get hopes up but hopes kinda up. I need to buy some new slacks.
