Why can’t veteran devs make good games anymore? Trying real hard to think of an established studio that keeps on making good games. Owlcat and Larian not withstanding and owlcat makes good games 4 years after it releases.
Veteran devs surrounded by a sea of incompetent people born in the 21st century along with execs who only care about maximum monetization in the era of microtransactions.

Most industry veterans get ousted from any big organizations these days. Half the reason is industry politics, the other half is big companies preferring a bunch of shitty new hires over playing for a few truly talented people, and the two basically work towards the same goal. Big problem with industry veterans is how they know things, have their own thoughts and ideals, and won't just follow the orders of some corporate executives who want to dictate every aspect of a video game. That and they are far less likely to be onboard with all the radical left activism today's western AAA studios seem to desire and probably won't get along with all the DEI hires either. So HR either comes up with some excuse to oust them or they get fed up with all the office politics and leave on their own.

Now most big-name western studios are just the names alone with none of the talent that made them well known and beloved. It's why so much in the way of new entries to beloved IP's of the past are so disappointing. They've gone from passionate ideas created by creative talent to pandering and manipulative ideals created by board room executives pointing at graphs manipulated by investors.

This is why I keep saying AA is the new AAA, because if you look at the dev teams who made some of the most beloved games of the past, they weren't products of these massive organizations with thousands of employees. They were usually just the work of a relatively small group of guys who all shared a similar passion and vision for what they were working on. Budgets didn't need to be massive, it wasn't all about pumping as much money and tech into their games as possible. They would do they best with what they had to work with and it was all about trying to create the type of experience they were after.

The whole industry needs a reset, modern AAA is just unsustainable in it's current form. We're at the point where the whole present day power structure and industry could completely collapse for the most part and AA/Indie studios would be fine.

I guess I’m not the target audience for this game. I played a lot of Destiny, but the pvp was pretty terrible. A whole game designed around that just sounds awful.

That trailer must have been directed by the dame guy that did the deaf conquistidor/coin covered siren episode in Love Death and Robots. The close up shots were suspect but it was all but confirmed when they did those weird ass and unnecessary backflips. I have not looked it up, but I am 1000% sure. The best thing about that was the no dialogue, and this would have been better without thr dumb talking. Regardless, I will not play this game.

There was a trend that started during the pandemic. A lot of high-profile devs left their jobs to start their own studios. They used their name and reputation to launch a new game studio, often just based on an idea and the promise of their name. To build their teams, they offered really high salaries to attract people.
The goal was usually to get noticed and bought out by big investors—like Sony, Xbox, Embracer, Namco, etc.—cash out before the game even got into full production, then leave and redo it all over again.


The problem is, this trend broke up some really solid teams that had good chemistry, all for more money. I can’t really blame anyone—it was their choice. I got offers too back then, but I wasn’t interested. I had just gone through a divorce after 19 years of marriage, and I needed stability and a good work-life balance to take care of my kids. My current company was the best at that, and still does.


Now that some of those studios are failing, I often see old teammates applying to come back. I sees a lot more peoples with grey or white hair on the floor. It's always funny to see someone I worked with 15 years ago doing the noob tour when they are hired.

rofl I feel in such a minority here.. I never like halo, I don't like destiny.. but I am way over-hyped for this game. Truthfully haven't been this hype for a game in awhile.. but I also love the extraction genre, played every one of them.. nothing like running up on someone and robbing their shit; knowing that half the encounters someone actually wants to survive..

Everyone is looking to make Tarkov in the equivalent of PUBG/H1z1, and be the Apex/Warzone counter-part.. while missing out on the real elements that make Tarkov, Tarkov(depth).. You quite literally have a lot of people across the entire game development industry being influenced by Tarkov for design philosophies particularly in the concept of actually invoking emotions with the high risk / reward gameplay.. but at the same time "casualizing" the tarkov experience, so that you don't have to spend 2-3 months grinding rubles to run meta kits for the casual player base makes a more approchable game(tarkov player base declines after about a 2 month into a wipe as people sink or swim).. and leaning into a drop in/drop out is a solid choice that hasn't been implemented "successfully". If it doesn't learn from the Cycle, that running high-end gear should be threatened by low-end gear; it'll flop and the dissonance will be too much to be an approachable game. It should always prioritize skill over gear, so argubly their system is the only thing that has me worried. Going in with a sub 100k kit, and coming out with a 2+ mil worth of gear.. and visversa is a visceral part of the gameloop that keeps it going. The no proxy is pretty sad, it is such a refreshing element to have the ability to use social engineering as one of your toolsets.

I'm also huge on the art direction. Y2k, late 90's futurism, playstation 2 commercials, reboot lookin ass game is chefkiss.. fuck seeing the AI robots gave me big Virtual-On vibes. I'm also someone who runs every game in esport settings, low low low and tuned up digital vibrance minus aa, usually have maxed for smooth edges, despite having the hardware to run it with high textures. I also personally love MotoGP/F1, so the graphic design and vectors are spot on with readibility, and a cut dry visual experience with a vibrant color scheme, sprinkled with natural enviroment elements to keep it grounded.

DrLupo has some solid critisms on some of the missing factors in Marathon that keeps Tarkov continuously engaging, like the level of depth per map and insane verticalities which seems to be missing.. but while it's kinda eyeroll-y at this point; he was mentioning that it seems like the devs are really listening and taking notes because they're putting a lot riding on this and essentially trying to get it right beyond the "go in loot/pve, get into some pvp, and get out" cycle.. But its inherent it misses like half the mechanics that really solidify tarkov, like action skills, gun depth, bullet diversity, and armor diversty while alway rotating around the great equalizer of a 1tap headshot.. luckily marathon doesn't look bullet sponge-y, but it might be.. then there is the whole controller aim assist problem and how that will be.. iirc or what I remember hearing, destiny was criminal with how aim assist was.

Tarkov is unfortunately going the way of the zoomer and becoming a hipfire full auto fest. Arena just upped this because now they can practice for free on other people without wasting ammo/kits.

This game doesn't really appeal to me with it's LSD trip aesthetic but I'd play it if it was F2P, probably. I like extractors, but outside of the EARLIEST Dark and Darker and Tarkov I don't think many of them have the je ne sais qoui that makes/made those games great.

HOWEVER, we're all old as fuck and kids love arcading ADHD stim shit so this will probably make a billion pretty quick.

People been clamoring for Destiny 3 for years. We as destiny players thought there was always one in the works. Surely there has to be another Destiny sequel in the works, right? Then its revealed that in fact, no, there is no Destiny 3, just this garbage that no one wanted. They took their prime Destiny franchise that made them hundreds of millions of dollars per year and ran it to the ground, then built themselves a new lavish office they can have their little communist work utopia in (when most people post covid work remote at least part of the week).

They sell themselves to Sony for like 3-4 billion dollars, not even being worth 1/2 that because they squandered all the D2 money. In fact, few years before, it was all about being FREE from the big studios. Bungie hailed as being finally FREE when they bought themselves out of Activision. It was supposed to be a new dawn for Bungie, freedom to do anything they want. And all we got is shit until they squandered that away. Years of half baked expansions and boring seasons ever dwindling D2 population. Best Destiny 2 years were under Activision. Where we got huge expansions and 2 more side studios making content for destiny 2. (Which all of that content was taken out of the game, looool)

So this is what we get instead of Destiny 3. Another dying AAA studio.

#1 fucking problem with Bungie is their insistence to continue using their ancient in house engine. Until they nut up and move to a better engine for handling massive environments and whatnot there's only so much they can do, D3 would just be a fresh reskin otherwise.

Christ almighty what is it with companies that start with B and doing retarded shit. Looking at you Bethesda, Blizzard, Bioware.
