How advanced does your child need to be to confound an adult? If your child is so advanced that he's getting ahead of the material, he'd only benefit more from homeschool curriculum which can alter to his pace.
Simply having complex interests that the parent does not share is enough to do it, really. As a kid I had intense interest in physics, music, and computer programming. Fat fucking chance my parents were going to be able to even remotely coach me on all that. As it was, even my teachers didn't keep pace with my interest and I hit the library a shit ton. Granted, the internet helps a lot in the modern era, but how many points of view are kids going to get when they are only allowed to reference Conservapedia in most of these nut job households?

Not saying ALL home school situations are like that You-Tube video, of course, but the bulk of them are in fact because of religious motivation. I guess its ok if white Christians are going it....?

Sure, but you'll need tutors unless you think 100% you'll be smarter in every subject than your advanced 16-17 y/o teenager and be able to effectively teach them. I just don't agree with what seems to be the majority viewpoint here. I think there is a lot of arrogant thinking in regards to how capable a teacher some people think they are in every single subject and how far ahead of their kids they think they'll be. We aren't talking about 12 year olds here.

School provides far more than just education or socialization. It's your first encounter with a power structure outside of your parents. It teaches you structure, responsibility, deadlines, and accountability. It exposes you to discipline from entities besides your family. I just don't see how this can be replicated by your parents.
With how shitty American schools are now I dont believe that.

You chewed your poptart into the shape of a crude gun? SUSPENDED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!! Your mommy gave you some asprin because you have a headache? EXPELLED YOU HAVE DRUGSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS SSSSSSSSS

Bro learning calculus is as simple as going to khan academy. Ive used it extensively while in college and its great. I see Lindz beat me to mentioning it.

This home schooling derail is almost as awful as whatever that other derail was a week or two back. I forget. But it was pretty terrible.

I think No Child Left Behind proved that children can be coached to put the right answers on the tests without learning a damn thing. The real crime is the fact that these kids have no chance to form their own social experiences and moral values systems, because they are isolated from society. I bet if they actually psyche tested these little Jesus Bots for things like mental health and critical thinking, there would be a whole different story to tell. Dealing with shitty situations at a public school is a valuable learning experience, worth more than any of the actual educational content, because it prepares you for having to deal with the same shit all through life. It makes you cynical and skeptical. It makes you strong. Living in a Jesus Themed Echo chamber just insures that you will inflict the same brain damage on your hillbilly spawn when you end up settling down with another sheltered social cripple at some point in the future. I could give a rats ass about the actual academics of it. I have seen the damage these nuts do, first hand.
People not wanting their children told at school that their religion is wrong doesn't make them some sort of Westboro Baptist nut jobs. Like I said, I know quite a few of these people and I am related to a couple of them and they are nothing like what you are talking about. Obviously you have some serious issues with religion but you are going full retard on this.

It's pretty nuts to not believe in evolution and take your kids out of school because you don't want them learning science.

You can look at it that way, but when you think about it, what you believe about the origins of the planet has pretty much zero impact on your day to day life if you're not a geologist or something and most Christians have no problem compartmentalizing that and they are pretty much normal on everything else.

The type of Christians that would take their children out of the school system because of evolution are not "pretty much normal". There are plenty of Christians who don't do such things.

Sure, but it's not a line of demarcation between normals and wackos. Like I said, I have an aunt and uncle and a couple close friends who homeschool/homeschooled their kids for primarily religious reasons and they are "pretty much normal" and certainly not some sort of isolationist radicals that Phazael is trying to portray them as.

What do you mean she doesn't believe in pollution?
Thread moves fast... I don't know, man. She thinks pollutants "make the air dirty" but that it doesn't have any affect on wildlife, habitats or climate. She makes no rational arguments to back any of her beliefs and when she runs into a wall it turns into "God's Will."

That's cool and everything, but evolution has nothing to do with the origins of the planet. It's a natural mechanic for living things to adapt and survive. It can very easily answer the "how" without ever getting into the "why."

if you're not a geologist or something
The origins and evolution of life are important to far more fields than geology. Evolution has implications on every medical field, for one. Even computer science has many algorithms based on evolution.

Doesn't matter how "normal" you think they are, if they aren't letting their children learn about evolution, they are far far from the mainstream and are hurting their children.

You might as well say they don't need to learn algebra either.

Fundamentalist Christian doesn't automatically mean "stupid," especially from a book learning standpoint. Just like you can understand how Christianity works even if you're an atheist, you can understand how evolution is supposed to work even if you think it's bullshit. Even the worst kind of fundamentalist Christian indoctrination doesn't mean "bad at math," these things are not related. Not knowing that gay people even exist, because your parents keep you at home and sanitize all the media you're allowed to access of any mention of it, doesn't impact your ability to find the derivative of a function.

I grew up in a neighborhood with a lot of hardcore Christian homeschoolers. In general, these kids were academically extremely smart, and I have no doubt they kicked everyone else's asses on standardized tests and college admittance. However, the primary motive for the homeschooling was still to prevent their children from from sinning by preventing them from even conceiving of the possibility of sinning in the first place. Things like sex were simply not talked about, and the kids were prevented from accessing any source of informaton that could potentially explain it and how it works. I knew 16-year olds that did not even know what a condom was even as a general concept, and I was warned ahead of time before being allowed to interact with them not to bring up such topics. It's not that they thought it was evil or wrong to use one, but they had absolutely no concept of a device that you cover your dick with. One teenager who lived on my street was not allowed to watch TV unsupervised and was actually forbidden by his parents from entering any store that sold condoms, because they did not want him to learn about their existence.

This type of upbringing is more common than you think, it's the reason why things like the Super Bowl "wardrobe malfunction" are such a big deal, and it's why these parents campaign so hard to get "objectionable" material sanitized from broadcast TV entirely. If something like the "wardrobe malfunction" showing up is even a remote possibility, then watching that kind of programming with your family is no longer an option. If you're bringing up your kid with the intent of not allowing him to know that homosexuality even exists, "just change the channel if you don't like it" is not a viable option as your kid only needs to see a gay person on TV one time to completely obliterate your strategy.

I'm confused by your post Xequecal. It sounds like on one hand you are defending this practice, but your examples are so crazy that I can't conceive of you actually thinking it is okay. Raising someone to adulthood in modern times with no concept of birth control or safe sex or that homosexuals exist is just fucked up. That ignorance is appalling.

A lot of people are posting that fundamentalist homeschoolers aren't actually teaching their kids anything and just getting them to BS their way through it, or that the kids must be destined to do poorly because the fundamentalist teachings are anathema to academic learning. I'm just pointing out that these things really aren't related at all and it's perfectly possible for fundamentalist Christian homeschooling to produce high quality academic performance, even though it's probably screwing them up in other ways.

I've got a problem bros. My girlfriend is kind of "earthy". She doesn't wear deodorant, she doesn't use scented or fragranced soaps or shampoos, she doesn't even use flavored, scented toothpaste. Everything has to be "natural". Now, she's not a hippie, she isn't trying to save the earth... no that's not why she is this way about fragrances and scents and deodorant. I found out this weekend she doesn't use it because "chemicals are bad for you. Deodorant causes cancer." Ugh...

I've known she doesn't use scented soaps and such since we started dating because she never smells like anything. She doesn't smell bad, she doesn't smell at all... usually. She just came to visit and we spent more than 2 days together for the first time since we started dating. She was here for 5 days. It was bad... real bad. The second day she was here she didn't even take a shower and she smelled fucking terrible. So I very politely and sincerely talked to her about it. I told her very gently she didn't smell great and that I don't think the fragrances in shampoos and soaps are harmful at all and I like how a woman smells.

She got sad bros. She didn't get mad, she got sad and then I got sad. Them feels. But fucking christ almighty who the fuck doesn't shower for an entire day? Especially after having a ton of sex the night before? Fuck...
