Scarlet witch is really very strong and is pretty amazing for large good AOE combined with really good self sustaining HP regen. I love rocket but SW is currently a good bit stronger although I have not tried rocket after the last round of changes and the petless grenade spec sounded fun.

Did some searching quick for places to start for new players:

MH subreddit -Marvel Heroes 2015
Guide to starting heroes (tad out of date, doesn't have Doom or Vision) -Which Character Should I Pick? A Guide to Picking a New Character. : marvelheroes
PDF of some starter information from Reddit -Dropbox - Marvel Guides.pdf
The "Guides" subforum of the MH forums -Gameplay Guides - Marvel Heroes 2015
- Inside of this forum there are lots of new player oriented posts/videos.

MH has daily login rewards like crafting materials and whatnot. Login gift day #2 is 400 Eternity Splinters. Splinters are a currency that drop in game from killing dudes with about an 8 minute cooldown between drops. You can use them to purchase new Heroes, Team-Ups, and a few other things. Heroes range in price from 200 to 600 splinters, but you can check the vendors in game to see exact pricing. So first day you start playing you can pick a hero (I don't know which heroes are starters anymore...sorry), and then on day 2 you get enough splinters to immediately purchase a new hero from the 200/400 splinter heroes available.

You can't really go wrong if you just play. The only terrible starter is Colossus, assuming he's still a starter. All of the rest of the starters are solid, although Black Panther and Luke Cage are a bit old.

Spend all your splinters on random hero boxes until you've got like 30 heroes. Level as many heroes as you can to max level to maximize your xp synergy bonus. Get in a non-retarded supergroup so you can ask people questions.

You can definitely go wrong with Luke Cage. Dude is terrible, BY FAR the worst hero I've played.

Current Starter heros are:

Black Panther - Fairly weak right now, not terrible but in need of what they call a "quality of life" pass to fix his items and some of his skills (they do these QoL tuning changes very often)
Black Widow - Recently got her QoL tuning pass and is fairly fun to play. Can be played as Ranged or a Melee/Ranged hybrid (melee heavy). Both specs are viable.
Captain America - One of the stronger heroes in the game right now. Tons of damage, interesting rotation, more interactive than some heroes, fairly durable once geared well
Colossus - Terrible. In bad shape and desperately needs a QoL tuning pass, which he should be getting soon.
Cyclops - High damage ranged glass cannon. Has one of the best synergies in the game (each hero has two synergies, one unlocked at 25 the other at 50. You can activate up to 10 hero synergies to add bonuses to the hero you are currently playing. Cyclops gets +10% XP gain as his level 50 synergy)
Hawkeye - Recent got his QoL tuning review and is very competitive now. Decent damage, decent survivability ranged hero.
Hulk - The ultimate faceroll burst damage hero in this game. He will annihilate any and all content even in shit gear outside of Cosmic Patrol Zones (not terminals) and Raids
Luke Cage - In need of a QoL tuning pass, he should be coming up soon like Colossus
Punisher - Recently got his QoL tuning pass and one of the best ranged heroes in the game. Good survivability and high damage, ranged.
Rocket Raccoon - Recently got his QoL tuning pass and is a pretty decent spot. His summoner build is good and his ranged build is workable.
Storm - Probably one of the more underrated heroes in the game and a great starter hero. She can be squishy but she has so much CC if played correctly she's almost unkillable. Ranged hero.
Thor - He's in a weird spot right now, he doesn't suck but he isn't great. Fun enough to play.

My recommendations for new players are:

If you like stealthy assassin types go Black Widow
If you like pet classes go Rocket Raccoon
If you like smashing the shit out of stuff with a very simple rotation in melee range go Hulk
If you like melee but prefer more "interactive" playstyle go Capt America
If you like blowing shit up at range and like managing cooldowns and resets go Punisher
If you like a kiting playstyle go Storm
If you like to min/max the fuck out of everything including your morning coffee go Cyclops (he has, by far, the most theorycraft heavy subforum in MH)

Did his recent unique review make him strong? Because he wasn't all that strong comparably before that.

He's clunky but he's got respectable TTKs. Badly needs QoL pass. Thor got a couple buffs with this most recent patch that helped him out a lot.

Big Ten was pretty good to me. Up to 4 Cosmics, 20 Reds, and a handful of Greens. And I got Dust of Death and Helm of Doom, crafted Omega Sentinel's Blaster, so I got the Armorer title. Hells yeah.

You can only take them to level 10. The ones I listed are the ones you can choose when you create an account and take to 60.
I am not 100% sure but I am like 76% sure you can pick anyone besides Doom to take to 60 as a new player.

No, it's just the heroes I mentioned. I made a new account this morning to check actually because no info is available on the site.

Yeah, but you still get the 400 splinters to choose a second hero right? So you can try out every hero but Doom, land on one, and buy it with your 400 splinters (disregarding the few who are 600).

Maybe it was for that anniversary event? Because I leveled Nightcrawler to 10 and got to unlock him as my starter a couple weeks ago or whenever that was.

Yeah, for a time you could play all heroes but I think Doom, to level 10, as part of the anniversary.

EXCLUSIVE: Marvel Heroes 2015's Newest Loot: $25,000 of Real Money | Comicbook.com
Gazillion Entertainment is redefining the term "epic loot" to cap off their second anniversary celebration month. Rather than a piece of high-end armor or a unique item that makes your favorite Marvel character stronger in Marvel Heroes 2015, Gazillion is dropping five randomized "Vibranium Tickets" each valued at $5,000 US cash, ComicBook.com has learned exclusively. The tickets will start dropping on Wednesday, July 8.

Any player of the free-to-play action RPG can go for the Vibranium Ticket as determined by the official complete rules and eligibility. The tickets will drop as randomized items at randomized times, with five items totallying $25,000.

Any players who have claimed their prize by the start of Gazillion's Marvel Heroes 2015 panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday at 6pm PDT in Room 25ABC will be publicly congratulated.

Sure beats your 10th "Last Chance" Serrated Boot Knife drop, now doesn't it?
