prequels are fine. a good movie is always about the journey of getting from A to Z. There's plenty of times when knowing where Z is makes A through Y incredibly engaging. the problem is that people do prequels because they generally are trying to cash in on a brand that has already had a complete story arc. the star wars prequels get the most flack, and deservedly so. but it's not about "not caring what happens to obi-wan because we already know he survived," it's about watching what should have been the hope of the republic turn into the scourge of the jedi. you have a story that should be 100% character driven created by a guy who can't write dialogue and who is obsessed with special effects. the idea of watching an idealist become an unrepentant murderer is incredibly intriguing but all we got is, "oh, hey annie! (darth vader has a girl's name...) your mom is dead. that's so sad =(" and then 2 movies of a lanky, awkward teen yelling and crying about how life isn't fair.
the point is that the idea of a "prequel" isn't inherently bad... it's that the people who are making these prequels are.
on topic: I am so not looking forward to any kind of return to the matrix.
