Just finished X and Pearl. X was the better movie. Pearl was good but different style. X had some really good scenes and compositing or layering of events. Somewhat heavy handed but I liked it. Pearl seemed like an excuse to have Mia Goth carry a solo film and give her writing credits. Her monologue in it wasn't bad but fake country accents get on my nerves (see above). That chick must have issues though. It at least gives some perspective to the character in X, not at all required viewing unless you want to see the whole trilogy.

One of the last scenes of Pearl, her chasing the other chick with the axe, was really cool.

Then all I could see in the closing credits was Windowlicker by Aphex Twin.

I think they are all supposed to have their own style that they are playing off of. Texas Chainsaw Massacre for X, Technicolor-era movies for Pearl (only with the fucked up twist, obviously).

Pearl is always interesting to me, even though it is definitely a worse movie than X, its just neat that it was mostly made cause they filmed X in NZ during covid. And during that, Ti West wrote Pearl, and the Avatar crew was also there on a break, so they were the people who made the movie with him. I think he even said he was surprised at how fast A24 Greenlit the whole thing. "You got a movie to shoot and a cast and crew who doesnt need to do any quarantine? Fire it up"

I definitely enjoyed Pearl and they nailed it in the same ways that the successful episodes of WandaVision did. Or at least the episodes I liked. Had no idea about the backstory of it being made, pretty cool. Looking forward to Maxxxine more now.

I think her weird, broad face reminds me og Hajime Sorayama's chrome robot chicks. Maybe that's why my dick jerks from all the memberberries. Hmm.

Can't be any more boring than X. I'll put it on when it shows up on tv.

Critics were right on this one. Everything was fine until the reveal.

Watchable, won't get shut off-- but tried too hard to subvert expectations with the 3rd act and nearly ruined an otherwise competent movie that was made on a budget of 1 million (which is hard to believe but I guess work is hard to come by for some of these bigger names in the movie. Feels more like a few million in the budget) The budget was so low that the movie was commercially successful.

It's carried by the 80's setting and the soundtrack. Not that it's all that good either, its just that it's 80's music.

Without those 2 things, it's got nothing going for it and it's an easy pass.

I never understood the video for Windowlicker. All the women are changing into the Aphex Twin guy? Everyone's grinning? Not sure if it was supposed to be a statement on people being objectified, or everyone was being body-snatched, or what the story was there.

As for Mia Goth, I don't dislike her or anything, but she gives off this huge "community college theater student" vibe with everything she does and they build these movies around allowing her to overact and showcase her chops. Not sure if she's supposed to be the protagonist in these movies because she comes off as a psychopath. Maxxxine never had any real tension because she easily overpowered everyone who tried to get her and usually brutally killed them. Crushing the guy's testicles was really swell. So she's the villain of the movie?

Liked X and Pearl a lot, didn't like Maxxxine. Of course the highly-religious father figure turns out to be evil and gets brutally beaten to death at the end. Basically both of the movies I watched this week (Maxxxine and Immaculate) are "church is evil" movies that have nefarious clergy members getting brutally beaten to death.

This kind of thing seems to be rampant in current year movies. You'd never see any of this shit about Islam or Judaism.

Finally got around to seeing this since its October, what an odd movie. I didn't hate it but its not really a horror movie and it feels like nothing much really happened. I dig the vibe of the movie and it was neat seeing this little slice of 80s Hollywood but it didn't really feel "real", more like pretend play time. Some extremely bizarre choices for the story and maybe too many plot elements.

It'll be on HBO oct 18th and i'd just wait until then to watch

Did the X, Pearl, Maxxxine trilogy this weekend. TBH Maxxxine is probably the weakest but all pretty well done. :emoji_thumbsup:
