Depends on what you're overfilling, but that's a good way to blow a seal. But in my own (non-civilian) experience, that's mostly applicable to sealed assemblies, or something like an engine. I guess you don't want to be careless with a car transmission, but I have seen where it simply pushed its way up the dipstick tube and drained from there when it got hot (was SUPER overfilled, LOL).

I guess his overfilling it could have caused damage, but that absolutely seems questionable to me. Kind of in the"We really don't know what happened but it's overfilled so we're going to take that easy out"category.
