For Red Sox fans I think this coming off season may be the most important/interesting in a long time.
They have likely 90m+ to utilize. Along with an almost assured protected top pick.
The org is absurdly loaded with players near MLB ready. At AAA you have Betts, Swihart, and Owens as consensus top 20 prospects.
Additionally a swarm of fringe top 100 guys like Webster, De La Rosa, Barnes, Ranaudo, and Brian Johnson. Also newly acquired guys Eduardo Rodriguez, Edwin Escobar, and Heath Hembree to round out the pitchers. For hitters you have Marrero, Coyle, and Cecchini as guys at least in AA who project as MLB regulars or better.
Even without considering the lesser prospects like Shaw, Brentz, and others it's an INSANE amount of young players to possibly incorporate into the big leagues in the next cpl years with post prospects like Bradley, Bogearts, De La Rosa, and Workman working on establishing themselves.
I don't see Boston basically conceding next year to see what they have from all these prospects. The top guys will be incorporated + others who look good in the show, but I am guessing Cherington will look for some trade targets. Possibly trying really hard to get Stanton, or another young perennial all-star.
As for FA I think they will go hard for Scherzer as a legit ace in his prime. Lester is possible if the team thinks his improvement since last August is real. Shields is getting linked to BOS and I could see Ben trying for two of the three given how weak the FA market is otherwise. Resigning Koji should depend on price and a QO could make sense.
The Cubs are another team that will have a super important off-season, they have an amazing stock of elite prospects at the moment. Very curious how Theo's experiment works out.
