Bones should have had a point taken for that open hand to the face shit early and often. Other than that, awesome fight. It was kind of dumb engaging close to the fence so much in the 5th, or I guess it would have been for anyone else. He took a few big shots there but after wrecking his shoulder(anyone have a gif?) it didn't seem like JJ was scared of Glover's right hand at all.And a big right hand is all Glover really has.

Max Holloway is fun to watch. One of the meanest looking guillotines I've seen

Phil Davis had fuckin' nothing for Anthony Johnson. Too fast and too strong. It was insane how fast he pulled the trigger on those uppercuts when Davis shot. Damn shame, was really hoping Davis would get it to the ground. I love his ground game. Weird that such a good wrestler just can't seem to translate it to MMA takedowns, this was not the first fight where he's been unable to take it to the ground.

That was a great card top to bottom. Except for the usual mediocre girlfight shoehorned in.

I feel kind of bad for people that have only experienced UFC era Takanori Gomi. If you told them that he was once the best 155lb fighter in the world they'd probably call you a lying asshole.

Couldn't find a gif of that shoulder pull, anyone have it?

In addition to all the other good things Jones showed last night, I think he showed that a versatile striking game is imperative to being a reliably great striker. Did we ever get confirmation on whether JJ broke/hurt his right hand?

Jones details how he made Teixeira's arm 'pop' in UFC title fight | MMA Kanvas

Crazy to think that won JJ that fight, or at least crippled Teix's ability to fight and enabled JJ to stay in the pocket without fear.

Jon Jones using the eye poke to great effect again last night. He does that shit in every fight. The UFC really needs to do something about it. Start taking points away from him on the regular or something. Other then that the guy is on another level.

Anthony Rumble Johnson looked like a freaking BEAST last night. He is going to be fun to watch.

I don't know how I felt about Johnson, his take-down defense was great, but I dunno...he was really picking on a guy in Phil Davis who has quite possibly the worst/most awkward stand-up game I've ever seen. So I need to see a lot more, I think Phil Davis was majorly overrated.

Davis is the guy who I thought might turn in to the man to really challenge JJ some day. That was 3 or so years ago. He has not developed like I hoped=/

He just seems completely incapable of imposing his gameplan on other fighters. Not sure the technical details that make it so, but if you watch JJ and him you see the difference. Jones completely imposes his will, Davis is just sort of out there. He doesn't have the crisp striking needed to be a counterstriker either so sitting back won't work.

Phil Davis showed me everything I need to see to completely right him off as anything more than a mid-level speed bump for guys coming up.

Five years ago he was young, raw, and full of potential. Today, he is essentially the same fighter, looking like a wrestler that just got thrown in the ring with professional boxers. He is the Jake Shields of the LHW division. Good bye.

Exactly, the difference between Bones and Phil Davis is Bones is always adding new stuff, innovating and just making himself an all around great fighter.

Davis on the other hand, doesn't seem to have learned a damn thing since he started.

Don't be hyperbolic. His striking is waaaaay better than it was. It's just that he started with negative striking and has only gotten it up to barely mediocre.

He looks the same because he's fighting top ten LHWs now instead of other nobodies. He has obviously improved a lot, just not enough.

Andrei Arlovski re-signed by UFC - ESPN

Looks like the UFC is desperate to add to the HW ranks
And he'll be fighting Schaub at 174. So the UFC is easing him back in with a punching bag.

So it turns out when Gustaffson was a teen he was kind of a piece of shit. After he did some jail time he moved, got in to MMA, and cleaned up his act. He's like the typical American ghetto athlete redemption story, except white as fuck.

The details of Alexander Gustaffson's past are coming out, and boy are they ugly. : MMA

Maybe, but it isn't like Arlovski is known for a good chin. Schaub only has to connect one time for Arlovski to take a face plant.

Pretty crazy shit there on Gustaffson. Good for him I say.

Yeah the other thing is that JJ improvises in fights. He used to do it a lot more earlier in his career because, well, he just didn't know how to fight at a professional level, had huge athletic advantages over his opponents and just threw shit like a maniac. Since then his camp has formally trained him on hundreds of martial arts techniques that he uses instead of dicking around.

But even in the last fight the move that won him the fight (cranking on Glover's elbow/shoulder) was shit he claims he had never used in a fight or MMA training before but was just some dirty move that people frowned upon in amateur wrestling. I've never seen that in MMA and I wonder if it should be used more often. It's interesting because it's a move done against an opponent that has underhooks on you which means it's a defense from a weaker position.

JJ also has the capacity to fight from desperation, which is what won him the fight against Gustaffason. In the 4th round iirc he was more fucked up than Phil Davis was in the third round so he just threw caution to the wind and threw everything he had against Gustaffson and got a random elbow in that changed the whole fight. If Phil Davis was in there he would've kept the same cautious and losing gameplan.

The gif Fedor linked showing a guy do it in Japan shows what can happen if you fully torque it and turn your body. Arm kersnap. It's funny because that gif was linked somewhere last week, I remember seeing it and thinking how crazy it was.

It was his signature elbow, aimed a bit lower than normal. Because Gus was ducking low to his right the entire fight while throwing his jab to the body, getting him out of the way of counterstrikes and negating Jones' reach. It wasn't random, it was great execution of something he does all the time. Still an excellent example of him adjusting mid-fight.

I only remembered that particular elbow so well because it was in an article by JACKSLACK!
