Agreed on all counts. There were times where I thought they were both dead in the water, but no one can take a beating quite like Diaz. I swear he's mentally retarded.
This is spot on.....while not quite retarded, he is so very very slow.
The strategy for Diaz and his corner was completely braindead. Quite obviously IMHO, Diaz should have tried harder IMHO to outgrapple Connor like he did in the first fight. Outgrapple, outslug up close, not try to macho outbox or outswing him.
BUT this is not a streeth fight, it is not about macho (tm) shit. Everyone knows 99% of the pre-fight stuff is UFC mandated marketing shtick like in WWF right? It is NOT a sport at all in that sense like Football or Tennis .... it is unfortunately a BUSINESS of PPV fight entertainment first and foremost: the fight machups are *fixed*/arranged not based on some qualitative assesment of skill or win/loss record, but on entertainment value.
Business and macho b*llshit aside though, for his part, Connor I thought showed considerable, almost perfect, restraint in resisting the urge to duke it out in a close in slugfest. Like Ali did with Foreman and Frazier and other opponents stronger than him, Connor outfoxed, outfought and out manouvered Diaz beautifuylly. Unfortunately (for Diaz) Connor learned from his loss and Diaz did not learn from his excellent first win. Not that Connor is any sort of Muhammad Ali, however Connor is IMO simply the better fighter within the rules. He has better movement, better tactics, better defense and avoidance, better strikes and offense, better versatility..... list goes on. Cocky bastar* knows it, and says it too.
While quite entertaining, it was also very furstrating to watch. The longer the fight went on, the more shocked I was Diaz was trying to win the fight on Connor's terms..... duh.... and he got schooled, BADLY, I found it quite sad really. Like a bull by a matador, just charging and getting beaten to a bloody, messy pulp. And wow, Diaz STILL almost had him at the end of the 3rd and 5th..... but again, saved by the bell. Diaz is going to be limping on that right leg for a week. Thank goodness he has a few COOL million to ease the pain hehe.
I cannot wait to see the 3rd bout. I am really happy for BOTH guys, they I hope they make out like bandits, making millions in a sport in which these poor saps normally get taken to cleaners to by the UFC before retiring in debt and half braindead. Diaz is definately most of the way there, perfect timing for him to cash in now. While the Diaz Connor drama is 10x better than the laughable 13 second Aldo fight, IMHO Connor should go back to 145-155 and rule the roost there. He has proven his point, he is an excellent fighter. Now go back to 145 and defend the other belt.
All in all a memorable classic this was.
The 3rd one I see Connor loosing honestly, at whatever weight, unless Diaz has more brain farts and fights the same way again. We shall see, depending on how much, if at all, Diaz's scarred, concussed brain recovers......
