Connor is a fantastic fighter no doubt about it. The UFC and that new ownership should be fucking giddy, because without him things would be pretty bleak. The heavyweight division, which previously oiled the gears of the organization, was their biggest attraction, with guys like Lesnar, Valasquez, Dos Santos, etc 5-6 or so years ago along with GSP. But injuries and championship carousel started to tarnish the brand. McCregor slowly starts to earn a name and they rightly played him into a position where he could have a platform to talk. He backed it up, and to his credit he is in the position to make more money than any MMA fighter in history by far.

I think its good for the sport though because if another guy can defeat him soundly and has at least some star power they can try and ride that train as long as they can, while still featuring McGregor as a redemption story if he rebounds. He needs to fight Aldo again IMO.

I feel like Nurrmagomedov would destroy Conor. I don't think his take down defense is nearly good enough to stay on his feet. Could be wrong, but watching him last night reminded me how good that guys is.

I thought Khabib looked like garbage for the first couple minutes of the fight. If Johnson was able to have a bit of success on his feet, I think Conor stands a much better chance

Conor would have the reach advantage as well just like Johnson did...but Khabib weathered the storm and once he got Johnson on the ground he was in complete control. I would imagine something similar would happen with Conor...but that's always been the argument against him. A great wrestler/etc will eat Conor alive, that's what everyone says. But they have to survive on the feet long enough to get him to the ground and keep him there. Honestly I was shocked by how little Alvarez had for Conor last night. I knew Conor could knock him out, but I thought Alvarez would have a chance to do some damage and maybe get control of him for a round...but he really had zero danger that entire fight, and just kept getting tagged with that left hand.

Long story short a friend of mine who was/is an inspector with the NYSAC has waited a long time to work an MMA event, and finally got the chance. Was in the ring all night, and I was pretty fucking jealous.

Very cool, any good stories to tell? Could he smell and feel Alvarez's fear/anxiety and nerves? I would love to watch from so close, to get a feel for the fighters nerves and speed (TV does not do it justice).

To me Connor looked extremely confident I thought, but Alvarezes body language seemed to me to be a little ..... rabitty and stiff. Alvarez seems like a decent chap, and a (probably?) much better fighter skill wise than he appeared (he was champ after all right?), but he seemed lacking in the nerves and upstairs mind games department.

Anyone here follow Alvarezes other fights? I never saw him fight but expected a much tougher, more competative matchup.

McGregor Aldo 2 rematch would be competative IMO, Aldo just got a little unlucky caught so early with that piston left but at least he went down swinging literally, and connecting (while unconscious :).

Alvarez is usually a pressure fighter who throws a lot of combos. He either never tried to or never got a chance to really employ his normal style here. He swarms guys with volume and speed usually. This time he looked hesitant, and never found a way past Conor's reach. He's at his best when he fights someone that will engage him in exchanges. Conor is just a terrible match up for him.

He's honestly a bit past his prime. He's taken a fuckton of abuse over the years because of his style. He's not as fast as he once was. His calling card for years was his ability to take an asswhooping and come back harder. Kind of like a sloppier Frankie Edgar with more power.

Check out his old fights, he doesn't do boring fights. Here's a classic.

Great card minus the misha fight and the main event.

Was I the only person that was watching the main card and thinking WTF is Eddie doing?

Is Stephen Thompson not the most Bad Ass fighter on the planet right now. Wow Fight of the year IMO

The last part of that gif, the part in slow mo, reminds me a lot of old school Machida.

Why was Eddie trying to box outside with a 5" reach disadvantage?

I remember him pushing Conor up against the cage briefly at one point, and getting absolutely nothing done. Conor looked huge compared to Eddie...he really had nothing for him.

Yeah I just wish that motherfucker didn't do shady shit in every single fight. At the end of each round that slimy fuck was pouring water all over himself.

I mean, that's what the fight was for and what they announced in the ring with him after while engaging Bisping....so maybe?
