Pretty sure it's 3DS exclusive. I didn't like MH3 but I love this - not sure why because I couldn't even tell you the difference in 'em. Only played MH3 for like 5 hours.

The final egg quest with the three deliveries and a frenzied rathian and rathalos almost caused me to throw my 3ds out the window. That shit was just obnoxious. I am now the Don of Eggs, bow before your dairy master.

I'm up to HR6 online now - farming Azure Rathalos for his armor for awhile I guess (getting 2 Rath Rubies is going to suck).

Trying to get a kirin guild quest from an expeditiin.
I've got a Level 11 Kirin Guild quest I can share - I got all the stuff I needed from him to make/upgrade the Thunder ele insect glaive, but now I need stuff from the Oroshi Kirin and no idea how to unlock him offline.

I'm dying on the rare components. Killed so many Gore Magala without seeing a plate, both solo and with Reth and friends. And killed a ton of Najarala without seeing a sharp beak, breaking his face, etc... But yeah, thems the breaks. Getting real good at killing them both it is like auto pilot now.
I have 6 plates and I've never looked for them, while farming Feelers. The rare stuff always drops when you aren't looking for it.

I'm just going to move on. Only wanted it for the F?ulnisschleuder LBG, but honestly the Royal Torrent is still fine. Did a set of Ceantaur armor to get PierceUp, Pierce S+, and Precision 10. The deviation on the Torrent was most annoying, but now with Precision it is like a sniper rifle, and Pierce S+ I can use Pierce S3. Makes quick work of most stuff I'm doing. So will just keep progressing and unlock stuff and build up mats through quests until I want to grind something else.

I might be retarded =/ Been forever since I've played MH, and for some reason, I completely forgot that you can just do quests over and over again to farm specific monsters. I have just been grinding the expedition hoping specific ones would pop =\ I have so many Jaggi/Drone/Set parts it isn't funny, but all the gear sucks hah. Oh well, time to actually finish my offline Tetsu set.

As to getting rare drops, the idea is that you want to break as much shit as possible and then trap them if you can, as if I remember correctly you have better odds of getting the rare drops (and some shit can only be earned through the rewards for capture) if you capture a monster vs. killing it.

Yeah the you can unlock the higher monsters in expeditions by clearing their counterparts in the story - also some mobs like Kirin ONLY show up in Expeditions/Guild Quests.

True for some drops, but the Gore Magala Plate that Intrinsic is looking for only comes as a low % from body/tail carves and quest completion.

Gore Magala Plate - MH4U - Kiranico - Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate Database

Compare that to the drop I'm farming, capturing adds another chance to get:

That quest, lol. The first egg I did not see either of the dragons, and its only 3 screens so I said fuck it. I was running with the egg right next to the zone line to deliver ad the dragons head fucking popped into my field of view to me rear/left and scared the shit out of me. Of all the multi-monster quests I've done that one had the most combat with both of them in the same zone constantly. I just unlocked rank 7 quests in single player, I'm 100% for the first 5, 6* still has quests to discover or unlock. Been slow playing the online to do with others.

Kirin is a research quest first in single player in rank 6 the first time you fight it.

Yeah but you cant repeat it (like some of the Advanced quests), so then you gotta trigger it as a Guild Quest by killing Ners/Gravios/Gore Magala in Expeditions.

Put about 20 hours into it so far and loving it. Tried my first foray into online and I can't stand some of these random groups. Rarely find a decent group of people.

I'm stuck on HR8 Rank up quest, Dalamadur. Really hard to do with a PUG as he has a 1 shot move and most people don't know how to dodge it.

So I'm just starting out with MH4 (just unlocked Expedition missions) but are there any tips to mounting? It feels so incredibly frustrating and obtuse.

It depends on your weapon of choice, largely. Just being higher elevation and doing a jumping attack of some kind or simply running off and swinging as you get near them gives you a chance at it normally. When it comes down to it though, Lance and Kinsect glaive are probably the best weapons to use for mounting stuff. With lance, you can hit special button and then just jump and you have a good chance at getting on top of a monster or just hitting them in the mouth hard, and it's easy to fire off especially when they are tired. The glaive you just hit R+B to vault up, then swing while airbone to attempt to mount. Other than that, just having Mounting Master points will give you the Rider skill, which helps with mounting and mount attacks.

Hm alright. I've just been doing sword+shield and I didn't know at higher level monsters mounting became more a requirement to take them down or not.

Is this a game where the crazy poopsocking shit is all optional post-story stuff?

Also, PSP or Wii version, for pc emu? I know the Wii one would be the newest non-3DS one. (Dolphin and PPSSPP both work excellent now)

Not that I'll get to this any time soon. It's just on a list, somewhere.

Wii U version is the newest non-3DS one. The Wii only game is not that great (Wii U version is basically just an upgraded version of the Wii game). If I was going to emulate a game, it would be one of the older PSP versions like Frontier, unless Dolphin also emulates Wii U games but I don't recall that being the case.

As for poopsocking, most of the crazy poopsocking is all end game stuff. The story in every MH is short(sometimes non-existent in the older games). Online is where the game shines in every version of the game. The easiest way to explain it is its similar to Diablo 3. You can get a really awesome sets but sometimes it requires a rare material to craft and you need to pray to RNGesus. You could easily acquire many other sets that are near as good or better depending on the monster you're fighting, but depending on your RNG and how much you poopsock will determine what you craft.

I think I've put 200+ hours into every MH game I've owned. That is usually getting the top tier weapons/armor for 2 weapon types (usually hammer/dual swords for me), beating all the monsters and most mission variants, acquiring a decently high Hunter Rank(HR) online. Even though I do that in every game, I don't feel like I'm "grinding/poopsocking" until maybe the end of the game's life cycle for me, which is usually why I put it down.

I'm a newbie. Why would I want to craft stuff with half the defense rating but requires all the same materials? Less STA drain?

The stuff with half the defense is Gunner armor that only those who use Bows/Bowguns can use - it has skills for those types of weapons.

You want the Blademaster armor - you can hit start when in the Forge Armor window to sort it to Blademaster only.

Gotya. I think I did reason that out but just forgot.

Also are most of the weapons fairly balanced it just depends on your playstyle? The 2H weapons felt very clunky and so far the S+S and Twin Blades felt the most fluid and natural to me.

This is a combination of things. Your playstyle is what matters the most, but the 2h weapons are realistically supposed to feel slower than the one handers. They all have their ups and downs though, Dual Blades is one of the highest DPS weapons in the game, but it is a huge defensive liability since you have to be right up on the monster and are usually in the middle of a button mashing whirlwind combo when it decides to turn around and smack you. S&S otoh has much lower DPS but is far more sound defensively due to the shield. Still a relatively fast weapon but not as good as Dual Blades for applying statuses and doing elemental damage. I personally have been unable to really pick up a second weapon after my Switch Axe, you really get the feel for a weapon and it is literally like playing a new game to pick up a second one. I have been trying to do ranged for a while, but aiming with an analog stick is just so clunky to me.
