How is elemental damage calculated in this game? I know monster that are weak to certain elements take 200% elemental damage on their weak spots. But if a monster does fire damage are they 100% immune to fire damage or do they still take more damage than from a non elemental attack?

Seems to be that elemental damage is currently trash. Built Blast weapons or Sleep/Paralysis/Raw damage.

Just got back from weeks vacation and first try one shot nerg. Feels good. Palico was MVP though. Slept him 3 times and plundered 7 pieces of loot.

Now to farm some gear.

Anyone else playing on Xbox 1? I've started having intense sound distortion in fights with more than 1 monster, started happening in Ancient Forest, now it happens everywhere. Its really, really bad.

2p Rathalos, 3pc Nerg makes elemental do really good damage if you're using the higher tier elemental weapons. The dude I watched was doing 3 minute nergs using sword and shield with the set bonuses i mentioned + Kirin's weapon. @Janx found the guy his name is MaestroNox on Youtube. He shows all of his gear at the end of his videos, what I cant figure out is how he has thunder element to 3?

Probably charm + decorations? I'm going to have to try this out. But yeah, since I am conserving my mats to get one Tier 8 in every creature category basically. For the achievement and variety. Going to be fun building multiple loadouts for them. I'm having some terrible luck with Wyvern Gems though.

I am thinking

1.) Zorah Hammer
2.) Teostra HBG
3.) The Rook Lance
4.) Kirin SnS I guess!
5.) Some longsword.

I also lucked out this morning and got Living Fossil and Bristly Crake endemic creature achievements. Just need two more and I am done with all rare pokemon crap.

Way behind where most of you are, but just "beat" the first part of the game. Go on my first adventure and run into beetlejuice and get basically get one shot after pretty much being able to face tank diablos. Fun times.
Loving this game.

PSN was messed up last night, we were going to farm the higher rank Kirin for the horns for the weapons but PSN said no. Hopefully tonight we can get back together and go farm some of these together.

I need to catch up to join the drunk hunts. Just opened Vale. Switched to Lance from using Horn up to this point. Hilarious how easy it is.

First part was very helpful to me to get my camera settings right. That other targeting video didn't cover some things.

I'm worried
Elemental is really nice on bows.

I have found elemental on Dual Blades to be also really good. I think it is mostly a matter of how many times you are procing the extra damage. I'm totally new to this game so I would be happy to be shown wrong, but my anecdotal experience has been that it is pretty nice.

I've mostly used Thunder throughout the game to be honest. I can't be bothered to faf about switching between a ton of different weapons and Thunder is pretty good damage in the sense that few are immune to it. Sure, you could get better situational damage by pairing Fire vs Ice monster etc but so far I haven't really seen the need.

I should further caveat this by saying that I just started doing 7 missions (e.g. two levels past Zorah). In the course of the game I only lost 4 missions - one my first capture since I didn't understand; one against Anja when I was tired; and another the first time I met Diablos; and one when I first met Rathos. So, in other words, at least through the base game elemental carried me, with basically no experience or deep understanding of the game mechanics, without any problem.

Wouldn't be surprised if this overall strategy begins to fail soon; but, hey, if you are someone who just wants to get through the game and see what it has to offer then elemental should be fine.

I keep like 4 elemental bows to swap around and am building a raw bow for the multi hunt quests. With the Rath two piece it's pretty decent as bows apply elemental damage on each arrow. Here is a speed run of a dude focusing on ele damage:

Hrmm dual blades have an ice and blast damage on the same weapon. Any other weapon do this?

From what I'm reading it looks like you need to focus on one element, most people use thunder since it has the most targets weak to it as their general damage build. The 2pc Rathalos, 3pc Nerg is about the set bonuses. They mix in ones with no decoration slots but with good skills to cap. They almost all use weakness exploit 3 and cap their attack skill to 7 using the charm + nerg coil.

The specific elemental damage on your weapon determines the cap which you need to reach to mix max. The higher the raw elemental damage the higher the cap. For example the Kirin SnS for example I need Thunder attack 3 to cap lightning damage from 390 to 530 or whatever the cap is (close to that for sure). Thunder attack 3 decorations are how they are doing it I think, since the gear we can see in the videos at the end anyway just not the decorations. Three of the streamers I saw at high level used this setup for rank 80ish content as their general purpose build. I told Janx last night though they have loadouts for certain encounters they swap too on their streams between quests. One of them did a crit 2h hammer build with just 100% affinity cap and was crushing shit even harder.

I fucking love that damage in this game has some depth and that there is multiple ways to get to end game. Every time I upgrade and think ok i'm almost close to BiS I learn something else to become even stronger that I didn't even know was in the game.

Looks pretty cool, but I've never played a MH game before. But, from what I've gathered so far, the point of the game is: kill monsters to get better items to kill monsters to get better items to kill monsters X infinity. Is there no end game? No goal? Is this a correct synopsis? I'm in a drought right now for game enjoyment and thought this could be fun to try.

I'm having shit luck with decorations. With my current hammer build I have -10% affinity... Need to find some decorations and stuff to increase it. Running Beetlejuice/Nerg armor at the moment mostly.

But that bow was badass. Makes me kinda want to make it!

This is the basic gameplay loop yes. But the monsters and encounters get more difficult and the margin of error more slim as you progress.
