I did it the past couple of times PSN was down. You need to trigger "Gone in a Flash" which has a pre-req of 4 optional quests from the biologists. Once you get the low rank one and get your thunderproof mantle you basically keep investigating the low rank one to max level and then killing. Once you get to 4 stars in the investigation you get the quest for the HR Kirin.
You can just jump in with us tonight though, we were grouping in it pretty much all of yesterday with all kinds of people who im sure didnt have the HR unlocked.

This is probably just a dumb question, but are Investigation monsters harder than their story mission (assigned quest) counterparts? I'm not that far into the game and just did an investigation for Anjanath. He tore my shit up and carted me 3 times so I failed. But in the story mission when I faced him the first time I beat him and didn't cart even once. He seemed way harder last night. Both times I tried him I was solo. Was I just having an off night, or are monsters made more difficult in investigations?

Investigations are for the randomized increased rewards/parameters. Like less time, less carts, but more loots because of it. You likely had an off night. Welcome to the club! But pro tip. You probably aren't crafting MAX pots and ANCIENT pots yet are you? Essentially a requirement if you cart you can get back up to food buff health level.
Difficulty is only between Low Rank -> HR -> Tempered at the moment.

Investigations are the same, unless you do a great hunt in which case all of the monsters have reduced HP.
Not sure a water weapon is particularly useful. The element seems poorly balanced to the point where using a ** ice/thunder/dragon or just going with max raw is better. Maybe make a lance if you really want one, that was the only fast-ish weapon I could find with decent raw+water.

I've only watched some LP's since I don't own a console, so I got a question for a possible future pc buy:
am I any way right in thinking that this game looks like a WoW-like single player/co-op variant without the annoying "bring me 15 bear asses" quests and heavy emphasis on crafting?

Stupid question. On item fetch quests like collect/deliver X quantities of plant, is there a way to have your flies track the items on the map for you?

It is more akin to Diablo. I would say. With a heavy emphasis on crafting for the various builds.

Not that I know of, but play enough and you can recognize them on sight anyway. If you're talking about the ingredients quests the ingredients plants always look like a ? on the map.- 1

I JUST got the 5M yesterday. It actually shows up at your daily login bonus. You will get your voucher and random item first, then the screen switches to say 5 Million bonus and you get a bunch of stuff there.
On a progress note. Piscine/Lynian/Endemic Life Research quests all complete. Piscine/Endemic final quests reward you with Gold Wyverian Tickets (free gems), if you talk to them again in the field after you catch the final critters. I am pretty sure I have every fish, and am just missing the Bristly Crake. Botanical Tree is now completely upgraded with all the fertilizers. Got all 102 Canteen Ingredients. Got Status/Fireproof Mantles and the Affinity Booster. And I haven't even started Tempered Farming at all lol. So much shit to do in this game. At 600k/1M zenny for that achievement as well. God I love this series so much.

I'm getting cancer from this HR 49 tempered Kirin quest. Think I've done it 15 times so far. I'm assuming people are either not running a thunderproof mantle or have low lightning resist.

You can right click on any of the Gatherables icon on the map and the scoutflies will lead to that item, not sure if Lump of Meat is such an item though.

Finally got the last optional quest I needed to complete them all, which opened up a crazy special arena quest. Winning that quest opens up the Commisoner armor set that allows an extra Carve (4-piece bonus). Male armor looks like the Commanders armor, and Female armor looks like the Handler.
