Garfield is basically just an old man yelling at the cloud at this point.

He wants 1994 era MTG back when no one knew how to play and everyones deck was shit, but that just isn't possible in current year. Too much autism and mixmaxing for that to ever be possible in gaming again, so he's trying to force it with artificial mechanics in Keyforge and it's gonna flop terribly.

Game theory is so good now that games get solved so quickly. So you balance it with some amount of randomness, but the how and where that gets placed matters. The wild west of card games is long gone.

It's more basic than that even. We get better over time at doing things.

These days when you sit down to play a brand new card game you've got a whole series of heuristics to approach it with. You can also learn from everyone a zillion times faster than you could when the internet was still new.

Came in with low expectations but split a Keyforge starter set with a friend of mine and we are having a lot of fun. Not a big fan of the set decks and whatnot but the two random decks we got in the starter are pretty even. I am 3 and 2 against him with the random decks and 1 and 1 with the Set decks that come in every starter. I would not recommend buying a starter set as you only get two generic decks (everyone who buys a starter gets these) and 2 randoms but if you want the keys etc I guess you would have to get them.

Not really sure on where the game is going to go but for $20 each we are getting our money's worth so far

Unstable, which costs less than $4 a pack and has guaranteed land in pack, has its basic lands selling for $4+ and foil $50+

Just saying

Only Islands sell for that. The other lands are like 2 dollars and basically nothing else in the set is worth anything. Foil lands are worth a good chunk though.

Good to know. My Walmart still has a decent amount and I was wondering.

Played my first paper tournament in 20 years today. Standard Showdown. Got my ass kicked in two matches, and one draw where we didn't even finish our first match before time was up that round. My Golgari mid-range vs. his. I was winning, in a sense, but it was obviously going to get stretched out way further if time hadn't expired.

At the end of the match I had 92 health and he had 28. At one point I had two Verdant Sun's Avatars out and dropped a Pelakka Worm, for 21 life gained in a single cast... the rest was just smaller chunks here and there. But had a bunch of other big creatures himself and it turned into a cold war arms race. Was pretty hilarious tho, the rest of the guys there said they'd never seen time expire before even the first game finished.

There were only 6 of us there, apparently top 8 get Standard Showdown exclusive boosters. The guy I lost to third match got two planeswalkers in his -- a Jace and a foil Karn. Foil Karn was worth $66 when we looked it up. And here, I opened mine before him and was happy with my $8 Watery Grave.

If there's one thing I'll kind of miss, it's the Tournament Packs they had. I bought so many of those for Ravnica: City of Guilds, since I generally got dual lands from them since the cards didn't repeat in those packs.

Went to a new year's event that was like some sort of 12 hours magic insanity.

We played a 16 person single pod draft with random packs all through out magic history after the draft portion we made our decks and played attacking left and blocking right and when a person died the table shrunk.

I lucked out because the guy two down on my right drafted some conspiracy card that said he couldn't put lands in his deck but could discard cards to put lands in. He had a insane start and killed the person next to me but then petered out and I ignored him after some discord hit his hand.

This allowed me to build up critical mass of giant bonk creatures in my 4c deck and eventually sweep the table and win the whole thing.

This got me $20 or so in store credit to spend on the next phase of the event where you each blind got handed a handful of bulk commons, 5 bulk rares 3 bulk mythics and 10 nonbulk commons and uncommins and you built a sealed deck including the stuff you drafted earlier

The store credit could be used to buy anything from the store to augment your deck so I had $20 I just bought a set of warchiefs goblin war strike matrons rcruiters a thundermaw hellkite a krenko and 2 siege gang for $20 and played goblins with the bulk ragins/goblin grapplers I had.

I ended up winning a box of UMA after almost losing to a dude who bought a playset of pack rats and hymns with his store credit.

If there's another banning in standard it's gonna be this thing - what the fuck are they thinking?

Yeah, especially since this set is going to have the Blue/Green guild. Spend all your Mana on creatures in your main step, then have it all untapped for fuck-you counterspells on their turn? Uhhhh

Told myself I'm going to quit buying booster packs, but just decided to pick up three Guilds of Ravnica packs while I was at the store. Ended up getting an Aurelia, Exemplar of Justice, a Niv-Mizzet, Parun, and an Arclight Phoenix -- those three together being worth about $40. A few decent uncommons too. How am I supposed to quit gambling on boosters when this stuff keeps happening?

^new card from Ravnica Allegiance, spoilered it mostly because it's a huge image and will be annoying on desktop, but hey I suppose it's technically a legit spoiler anyway.

I feel like a bunch of the new cards in Ravnica Allegiance are designed specifically to counter Golgari. The second half of this card seemingly even more specifically designed to take out Carnage Tyrants haha. Worded in a way that ignores hexproof.

Will be nice, there is too damn much Golgari around.
