Is there any reason why the U/B lists at the pro tour that were running Pearl Lake Ancient weren't using Whelming Wave?
Far too gimmicky, bad card. Pearl Lake Ancient accomplishes what it needs to do in those decks by itself. It would be absurd to run copies of Whelming Wave just to keep a creature on the board that has a flicker effect anyways.

There's also an unknown creature in the format that has a come into play effect : you gain 3 life, your opponent loses 3 life. You wouldn't want to unsummon that. Just blind luck that the UB control list didn't run into that disaster!

Apparently the Black Lotus video is fake. It's impossible to get a Lotus after a Tropical Island based on the original sheets/numbering.

Nothing is impossible with collation in early sets. You got starters with like 40+ lands sometimes. Can also be the end of one sheet and the starts of another.

You think the guy just had a nearly perfect black lotus lying around to make a fake video with? He shows the card off in the next video.

Yeah I was just going off what people were saying. But doing some research, the Alpha starters were all kinds of messed up and as I said in my first post, I believe this guy is a legitimate person, so I'm of the opinion that it is real. Pretty awesome.

He's not legitimate - one of his other video's he pulls an obviously fake beta Mox Sapphire. He's just doing this to drive views to his channel.

It's easy enough to find a near mint Alpha starter box and manual and shrink wrap them. If it was a real Lotus the other rare would have been a Mox Emerald - Tropical Island only came with Bayou or Warp Artifact - the way they printed/cut Alpha sheets was very predictable. Plus that Tropical Island had some weird dents on the back of it. Watch some other real Alpha/Beta openings on Youtube - the rares all follow the predictable pattern from the print sheet.

I'm inclined to think the video is fake because that's the age we live in but there were printing/sorting discrepancies all the time in the long long ago.

PS: Rakshasa's Secret is actually amazing in this format, don't tell anyone. I wouldn't ever play more than 1 really, well, maybe 2 in the right deck, but it's free if you have Delve cards to cast that turn, and people almost always hold cards in their hand so they can use their mana to morph instead, allowing you to snag 2 good cards frequently. Even if they discard land in the mid game, that's land they need to turn on their morphs so you win either way.
I've been very happy with Rakshasa's Secret every draft I've had it and it's a card that I'm still seeing at 12th pick.

Yea, I've been sticking to sealed but if I'm running Delve AT ALL it's an instant include for me. It's so good. 3 points for Delve for free while hitting their hand hard is ridiculous.

Plenty and plenty of stories dating a decade on the internet of people opening legit alpha starter decks with rares out of order, or no rares at all. Fuck ups happen all the time (seems particularly so with Alpha, set was all kinds of fucked up). If he was a faker, that would = intent, reasonably intelligent intent at that, why would he not just grab a cheap Warp Artifact? He can afford all this shit, but can't afford a Lord of the Pit or Warp Artifact?? The second video shows it as pretty damn legit imo. Although who knows.

This. I personally have seen all rare packs, and packs with no rares. Off cut cards all kinds of shit. The quality control in the packing places that did Magic in its early years was complete dog shit. You can also search packs of alpha/beta/arabian's without actually opening them

Weird, I did not know this was art for a card game. I have that more or less tattooed to my right forearm.

Sure it's possible - I got a pack with all foil timeshifted rares in it during Time Spiral.
It's not just "possible" as in super unlikely... it wasn't exactly uncommon to have partial runs in Alpha. Almost every single starter had split runs in the commons, so to be shocked about it happening in other parts of the runs is bizarre.

Hell, look at the Arabian Nights runs that were horrendous...

FUCK MOTHER FUCK FUCK FUCKER I HATE THE MTGO CLIENT.

Cm8p5mN.png

So I got eliminated in round 1 due to TIME because the MTGO 4.0 client is a slow piece of shit (I never, ever timed out in MTG 3.0.) Even on playing on a 4770K and I couldn't actually resolve shit in a timely order. Villainous Wealth was a slow laggy bitch to resolve for x=9.

THIS DECK WAS LITERALLY INSANE. SERIOUSLY. Great deck or GREATEST deck?

PS: Wish that was a fucking paper draft, like 40 dollars worth of cards in there.

I go with whatever the flow of the draft is. If people are going to pass me lands and gold cards, I'll take lands and gold cards. Otherwise I'll just take all the solid white+black cards and go Mardu or Abzan. White and black are deeper than the other colors, almost all of the white and black cards in a pack are playable, making white/black/x a solid backup plan for almost any draft.

Reading the draft is the only way to win in 8-4s. You can try to force the 4-5 color strategy by just denying lands to the people next to you, but they don't necessarily have to go along with it.

My basic plan is to look at picks 1-4 and take either the flat out best card in the pack regardless of color OR a Debilitating Injury if the best card isn't better than killing a random morph, at my discretion. Then if you see lands, take them and the gold cards. If you don't see lands, just take whatever best matches something in your first 4 picks. In gold sets you don't really want to commit to anything too early, and in this set in particular you frequently don't have to commit to anything ever if you keep getting enough lands.
