God damnit I need to vent. Wizards threatened the local LGSs with pulling their status if they assisted a strip club with running a draft. Offered to run it for them because lols. Turns out its difficult to arrange product in a reasonable manner without knowing how much you're going to need when your LGSs refuse to be involved. Sigh. Its tomorrow night and I got word that we were having it two hours ago because the owner was waiting to hear back from wotc legal. Also my girl is spending the week with me to help me pack and clean. Because I move Tuesday. God damnit. FML today! Think I may have bulk lands from an online reseller who deals in singles and is local at least. Because I threw away my bulk shit the day before shit hit the fan and I offered to take over as TO.

Better be worth it! Free drinks at least.

A magic draft.. at a strip club.. the sequence of events that led to that being a thing kind of blows my mind.

Why not just bring a couple of boxes of product over to the strip club, LGS charges slightly above cost of packs to the strip club, return unused product?

So, went to FNM with a friend for shits and giggles. Was watching him play when I saw the guys next to them playing some fun rounds in Vintage. One guy actually had a beta or alpha black lotus in his hand (black border). Not sure which, but it was pretty cool to see such a rare and famous card in person.

Anyway, my friend plans to drag me to these every Friday. So I was wondering, what's a cheap deck that one can play in Standard these days that is pretty good but not hugely costly? I don't have the time or money to dump into this game buying packs and shit.

That was my hope. Its as sorted as I can get it now at least. Owner is wavering again due to fear of a lawsuit. Been on and off a few times at this point and it better swing back to on since I spent my evening downtown at a dive bar picking up land from folks I know and talking to folks about it. Going to have some pissed off folks if they cancel.

As far as product goes the two main LGSs weren't interested in selling product to run the event due to direct threats from Wizards (This was implied but not directly stated but... Yeah no doubt in my mind that's what happened). Found a store that would do me boxes at $96.75 after tax and had 4x khans they could part with. Owner was fine with the situation since we wouldn't mention them by name. They will only let us return unopened boxes though due to mapping which I expected so meh.

Not sure how the idea came about. Was planned a while back. Apparently a few of the staff play. Word got around and wizards got wind. About a week ago they posted the LGS had backed out and it was canceled. They also had the actual logo on their flier so wizards sent them a nasty letter. I offered to take over and run it for them. They finally heard something back from wizards yesterday I guess. I got the go ahead that afternoon and its going on tonight hopefully. Don't see what grounds for suit they could have at this point as the flyer has been removed entirely and it's only been refered to as "a tournament" since their letter but I'm not the one who would be sued so their call. Going to suck if I wasted a day of packing to set up a draft that doesn't happen though!

Would have just contacted whoever sent them the letter with a notice of the changes made in response and notifying them of the intent to proceed barring further objections by the day of. Pretty sure that would have covered them but I'm not a lawyer and not involved on that part of it.

Play r/w tokens/heroic, deck costs peanuts and was good enough for a top 16 finish at the pro tour. Most expensive card in it is probably the city of brass?

Uh, not a god damn thing Wizards can do if someone wants to play Magic at a strip club. Also, they can threaten all they want, but when push comes to shoves, the LGS would win out. That's like Coke or Pepsi refusing to sell product to the strip club for fear of public image. Fucking retarded nerds.....

They can't stop you from selling product but the DCI can revoke your ability to run sanctioned events for all sorts of reasons you agree to when you're become a sanctioner.

i haven't played Magic in years, other than a Fake P9 cube draft. That Abzan deck looks like it could be fun but i have no idea how viable it is in the current meta, can anyone shed some light?

Mists post below yours is correct. Losing the support of Wizards would be a deathblow to a LGS. Can't run the events people want to attend and increased prices from secondary distributors for product.

I see why Wizards has an issue. The game is bigger than it's ever been and growing. But the people who would be outraged over this are not the people that are growing the game. They do buy shit from Hasbro though who owns WoTC. I'm about to leave to go run it anyways though so too bad. Wish me luck because I have no fucking idea how this is gonna go!

The people growing the game are the parents of the kids who buy packs. If the parents shit a brick, WotC shits a brick.

Got to the finals of Game Day but lost in game 3 to a rough keep / land screw. I stuck a hand of Caves of Koilos, Temple, Caryatid and never drew another mana.

Went to my first constructed event today. Went 1-3. Could have been 3-1.

One final match I was at 27 life, he was at 1. I had swung all out to get him to one knowing my deck had like 9 cards in it to finish him. Drew 3 lands in a row to lose.

Secons final I had the win in the bag l, I had it won and instead of just doing what I had to do I decided to get cute and go all out and to have him attack back and deflecting palm for lethal. But the guy drew a kill spell and killed my creatures and just never attackes back untill he drew an answer for my 2 palms he some how knew I had in my hand.

Learned a lot and had a ton of fun. Played mardu aggro.

I just don't see why Wizards would ever have to know about it. If the LGS owner is a friend, you load up wizard event reporter on a laptop and bring it to the club with their login info. There is nothing in event reporter for the tournament stating the location the event was held, and if they were REALLY paranoid you just don't sanction it.

Like, if suddenly 8 people show up in my store wanting to do a draft, I create a draft event and just use it to keep track of pairings/standings.. that's it. I could have taken the laptop to my house and ran the event there, wizards would never know. Someone would have had to contact wizards and been like 'herp derp, is it ok if we hold our events at a strip club instead of the game store that you approved??" It doesn't have anything to do with being a strip club, technically hosting a sanctioned event at a location they never approved is what could get you in trouble. You have to take pictures of your store and send them to wizards to be a retailer, and it has to look like a 'game store'. Don't get me wrong, I love that Wizards does that because it protects the brick n mortar places from other retailers cannibilizing the market for product. But, that's for places trying to get product that aren't game stores, on a permanent basis. For a one time event, you just do it and they never know.

In most cases it wouldn't be an issue. In this case an employee posted to both the mtg and town subreddits. So word was out. They tried to work with Wizards on it when they raised objections but pretty much got told to go fuck yourself and the LGS's who tried to run the event were pretty much threatened with their death of their businesses.

What you suggest is what we ended up doing. People showed up and held a draft. I ended up having to play because between gameday, the first Sat. of the state fair, and the it's on/it's off/it's on/it's off due to Wizards being dicks and the club being afraid of a lawsuit turnout was shit. I won with a five color deck and feel like shit about it but I was in charge of prize support so the five people counting me got 25 packs split for their $20 entry(11,7,3 and when I won I gave everyone an extra pack out of my prize). As well as a $50 and a $25 bar tab. Tabs went to 2nd and 3rd since I'm moving. Think everyone had fun which was the most important thing. The people not playing thought it was funny and cool from what I could tell. Wasn't ideal and we started two hours late hoping to get 8 people but glad I pushed so hard for it. Worked out in the end.

How long will these decks be good for in Standard? Would be kind of lame to buy one and it's cards get taken out of the block making the whole thing useless.
No one has exact dates yet, but it's around 12 months until next rotation, when Theros block and M15 cycle out. Not sure if you're aware they recently announced a new block and rotation system together with M16 being the last core set. Dates as yet unconfirmed.
