They really did need to go with a tighter time frame for the story. As it is, the movie is covering so much time that it can't really focus in and tell something that feels like coherent story. Instead, it feels more like a anthology of Napoleon stories alternating between battle > being weird with Josephine > battle > being weird with Josephine > etc. Battles were still good, and I don't regret seeing the movie, but an award-winning narrative it isn't.

I fell asleep near the beginning and all I remember is boring scenes with his wife. By time I woke up it was no longer holding my interest. Randin Randin description above is a good summary of how it felt

heres a review/essay for those that enjoy such things.
He's very aggressively hating on it, for historical inaccuracies, and being a hate-fic. inventing all kinds of nonsense seemingly to discredit and character assassinate Napoleon for some reason. the cuckery, manchild, etc all made up. Age is non-sense.

This was not good. Made Napoleon look like a normal dude and even disheveled loser at times, which is bizarre considering he's one of the great conquerors in history.

It just moved too fast, each important event was so compressed that it just felt like a ton of mini vignette's then a cohesive film. This wouldn't even be fixed by a directors cut like Kingdom of Heaven was its just too much material for a non documentary film.

That might be the last Ridley Scott movie that I actually enjoyed.

After reading numerous people swooning all over the Kingdom of Heaven directors cut, over the years, I went in with high expectations (never watched the release cut) and was rather disappointed.

I wouldn't get my hopes up.

I saw the original version back in the theater. Think I was in college, or at least somewhere in that neighborhood. Let us know it's pretty old at this point.

It was ok, but seemed really disjointed or poorly edited. Wasn't until years later I saw the DC, and was pleasantly surprised with how much it filled out the film.

Maybe it's because the bar was already set low, but it was enjoyable. Not the greatest movie, but trying to think about it, I really do think it's the last Scott film. I saw that I actually enjoyed.

Certainly wasn't Prometheus or that turd follow up movie.

Wackom phoenix is playing Michael scott (from the office) doing his best nepoleon impression. If you want to see that, watch the movie. Some cool war scenes. But a heaping shitload of them mangling nepoleons actual history and life events to make his chick into a more important historical figure , and him look like a douche.

Even if Ridley completely nailed the additional scenes (which seems extremely unlikely considering the tone of the wide-release), I see there being no way this makes this a "good" movie in the same way the Director's Cut of Kingdom of Heaven did. His take on Napoleon is just outright weird.

The british aristocracy really hate napoleon. To think some low born french commoner almost brought their whole world crashing down. Ser Ridley was just doing his peers a solid with this hit piece on the man.

Maybe it really was the presence of Kingdom of Heaven's theatrical cut that makes it seem so much better, but I really do love the DC. I'd love to say it stands completely on its own without having the theatrical comparison, but can't obviously. Burns Burns isn't the first person I've heard of watching the DC first and thinking it wasn't amazing, and yet of those I know who watched it in theaters and saw the DC later, they almost unanimously agree it's great.

Scott certainly had a lot of misses since Kingdom of Heaven, but... American Gangster (2007), Body of Lies (2008), The Martian (2015) and maybe The Last Duel (2021) ?
