He's a corrupt local cop who went in there to rescue his brother from the feds. And he put on a big show about being a hardass so that they would let him take his brother away, trusting that the local guy who hates him would fuck the guy up and bury him -- because now he has an excuse that the town will accept. But yeah, I get what you mean and sort of agree. It's meant to convey (which is starting to appear in later episodes) that he's a guy who's fairly good at putting on the act someone expects to see from him and using that to further his own goals. But really he's just sort of a regular guy who knows how big his goal is. You know, he'll play the part to get the job done type of thing.
I haven't finished this season yet either. I like it, but it doesn't have the "I MUST BINGE THIS" that the other 3 did.
It's still damn fine television, and i'll finish it sometime. It's not as immediately interesting. Still interesting though.
I think it might even be because of the structure. For the first three we had "white guy newbie hardass" narrating, he was our insert, and it gradually switched over into the other guy. This one doesn't have that narrative hook. We don't really have an insert. This is just a story. Very good story, I think, and well told so far.
