Tried to start up a character on a west coast server my friend chose that had great ping, but the queue was almost 18,000. Now I see this thread and decide to start on Vingolf, but even with a queue of only 900, this thing barely moves. I guess people aren't logging off, which is a good sign I suppose.

I started out at around 650 two hours ago, I'm at 17 in queue now.

I got in the game but didn't go through the tutorial as I do not have time to play yet unfortunately - haven't had time to read the thread - tutorial phase is a requirement to add friends? I did manage to log in and stayed there.
