Dalton ruined it for rookie QBs by leading his team to playoffs immediately. Wasn't a rookie QB starting unheard of before Dalton?
I assume this is humor?. Dan Marino, Bernie Kosar, Jim Everett, Todd Marinovich, Shaun King, Ben Roethlisberger, Joe Flacco, Matt Ryan and Mark Sanchez all were in the playoffs as rookies before Dalton, along with a pile of other rookies that started but did not make the playoffs (e.g. Peyton Manning).

The rules haven't changed. If you pull a rookie for performance, he's probably done in that city. So the only time you start a rookie is if you have nothing else on the roster or once you have already given up on the season. And Hoyer, Locker, and (likely Cassel) aren't nothing, even if their teams' seasons are almost certainly already done.

So the 49ers had to call practice early yesterday because the field conditions were so bad at their brand new stadium. Today it is reported that the sod is being removed and replaced. Can someone explain to me why they didn't put in some of that nice fancy artificial turf, rather than having to deal with all the work of keeping real grass nice?

Fair question. I've seen artificial turf lately that is very similar to real grass but probably has more 'blades' per inch than real turf. Plus you can pad underneath of it. Having said all that, I have no idea how hard it is to actually run and play on or maintain.

I think modern turn has basically no downside outside of nostalgia/tradition of regular turf.

And that was my understanding as well. I thought the new artificial turf was supposedly quite amazing, but having never played on it I can't personally comment. Just seems crazy to me that they would invest all that money in a brand new stadium, and are already having major issues with the sod.

Heh, I was thinking about how bad the 'Skins field has been and came across this gem from the Seattle/Washington playoff game.

The groundskeepers of FedEx Field literally threw some flakes of grass on top of dirt and spray painted the entire field bright green.
That's just sad, and like Ameraves said, with the amount of money being thrown around, inexcusable.

Steeler's grass field is notoriously shitty as well. Why they went natural grass instead of turf makes no sense for a new stadium.

With the amount of money the league makes I feel like the turf/field should be standardized. Surprising the NFLPA doesn't have more to say about this.

Current turf is great, it's actually shouldn't really be called turf. It has rubber granules littered over/under the blades to simulate the spring that real dirt/grass has

it's a dream to slide on too.

That's crazy. And yeah, I had the same thought about the Redskins (obviously). I have no idea why anyone would be using anythingbutthe new turf. The Redskins and Niners in this circumstance really blows my mind. The Redskins with how much money they pull in and protecting their assets (RG3), and the Niners with a brand new stadium. The turf supposedly plays faster than grass and both teams seem like they'd benefit from that.

The Redskins' cheerleaders should do an authentic Indian rain dance to get some quality grass to grow at FedEx Field.

Arrowhead is natural grass, and it's basically just a brown dirt pit from mid november on. They spraypaint the field green too. The only reason we still have grass instead of turf is that our idiot owner is a HUGE soccer fan(he played soccer in college at SMU or something) and is still holding out hope that Arrowhead can host a World Cup soccer match the next time the US gets a World Cup bid(whenever that may be), since those are required to be on natural grass. Friggin idiot, owns an NFL team worth a billion dollars and has them play on a sub-par surface for the last 1/3 of every season in the hopes of maybe, someday, getting a soccer game.

I'd actually be ok with this if George Toma was still working. That guy was a god damn magician with grass.

When the Chiefs had turf in the '80's, I was on the field and it was like concrete. I couldn't believe guys had to play on that shit.

Heh, yeah. I don't know if this justifies it, but he was called in to do the '67 Super Bowl, the '84 and '96 Olympics and the '94 World Cup (relevant?).

What can I say, I'm a turf groupie.

thats wild Gravy.. I dont know if I ever considered the quality of the grass/turf to really come down to the skill/effort of the grounds keeper. I understand he controls when its painted etc.. but very interesting.
