Yes, it was "designed" around the run. If it was supposed to be able to pass protect it would have been "designed" some other way. That totally makes sense. You should apply for a job as an O-line designer.
I know this is hard for you to understand because you're approaching GOAT levels of stupid, but certain linemen are better in pass protection than they are in run protection. It's a different blocking scheme from play to play. So, naturally, certain guys gravitate toward being really good at run blocking, some toward pass blocking, and some lineman that are playing at Michael Jordan levels are great at both. The 49ers line is comprised of guys (yes, I realize Kilgore is injured) that have a propensity to be better in run blocking schemes than they do in pass blocking schemes, which is obvious by the way the 49ers have been playing.
Now, I'm even going to use numbers to demonstrate this, so this part will be tough for you, but try to keep up..
Passing playing vs. running play percentage for the 49ers since Roman started calling plays..
2014: 53.43% pass vs 46.57% run
2013: 45.23% pass vs 54.77% run
2012: 46.98% pass vs 53.02% run
2011: 47.52% pass vs 52.48% run
The 49ers sat 31st, 30th, and 30th, respectively, in those 3 years in passing %. This year, they are sitting at 25th. But you're right, it's totally just the OLine sucking shit and not our coaching staff with poor schemes. We have a mostly healthy Crabtree, Stevie Johnson, and Brandon Lloyd this year! That must mean we need to air it out on 3 straight downs! Even though our OLine has been in shambles with injuries/holdouts, they aren't really great at pass protection, and Kaepernick isn't a pocket QB. Fuck it! Air that bitch out!
In smiths time they kept the TE to block and run 2 WR routes with an easy dumpoff after 2 reads. I haven't seen the 49ers much since then besides kap throwing lasers ro crabtree all day. Has the scheme changed that much? They dont seem like they have great 3 wr sets.
Yeah, they rarely ever use 2 WR sets anymore. Hell, I even remember the days of 2 TE sets. It's plainly obvious that the OLine is a dumpster fire this year in pass protection and rather than help it out by keeping TEs in to chip, using smaller WR sets, and other things designed to help block? Nah, just keep throwing the post corner!
