Michael Sam basically had great performance in college because he hustled more than anyone else on the field, and never, ever, gave up on a play. I don't know how many sacks and tackles for loss the got from chasing a guy ALL the way across the field, in the opposite direction from the end of the line that he originally lined up on, and dragged the guy down. He rarely just blew through an offensive lineman for a straight-up sack, he was the guy that would end up dragging someone down after they scrambled around for a while and ran out of options.
His play on the D-line reminds me a lot of the former Texas Tech/Dolphins linebacker Zach Thomas, who led the NFL in tackling several times, yet was drafted in the 5th round. If you look at the dude he looked small, slow, and not very agile. Yet he was in the middle of every damn play, no matter where it is on the field.
So this is what worries me about Sam, he's not a guy that can rely on god-given athletic ability, because his is lacking. If he's going to make it in the NFL it's because he needs to be a film studying monster, and a high hustle/energy guy. All these off the field distractions could really hurt those things that he needs to focus on to become a decent player.
