Honestly though, what bad can happen outside of a fumble? You have a good back, with a timeout in your pocket, who could break off a 15-20 yard run. Get a personal foul for a late hit or a horse collar/face mask...there are multiple possibilities that could happen. If you take a penalty, then you just kneel on it. I just don't get the whole "bad things are more likely to happen" when there's < 40 seconds left in your end of the field in a tie game versus first offensive play of OT.
Very unlikely to hit a 20 yard run on that and isn't Charles a fumbler anyways? That wasn't even his first of the night! Someone could get hurt on a meaningless play for one.

Even if you got 20 yards off the play, you'd be on your own 40 and would be near 20 seconds to go and you'd have to burn your timeout or spike it.

On the flip side it's not like Smith had a clean sheet either. Also he's not exactly a chuck it down the field passer either I guess. I don't know how much he fumbles to be honest, worth checking into. I just can't imagine throwing it is any safer than what they did. Either you try to make something happen and live with the consequences if something bad happens, or you kneel on it, and once again deal with the consequences if something bad happens in OT.

Chiefs D(other than Fleming) is Super-Bowl caliber

I feel sorry for the D, because the offense is going to run this team to a solid 8-8 finish this year.

Zero third down conversions and 5 turnovers. Completely inept.

Also feel bad for Maclin, he should have signed with a decent offense. He's on pace to have about 600 yards receiving this year

At least if you're throwing it I think you're going for a FG and the win, a run play to me in that situation is playing for OT. If that's what you're doing I think you might as well kneel the ball and take your chances in OT.

If you're on your 20 and have 35 seconds left you don't run the ball if you're serious about going for the win.

Stupid play, stupid prize. Grats.

Kneel it for ot or air it out.

I can buy this reasoning. Although I wonder if Alex Smith being your QB changes the equation slightly. Btw among active RB's, since 2008 Charles had the 5th most fumbles in the league going into tonight (assuming numbers/search is correct).

Pretty much this. Our rookie CB had a really good game, and our D-line are animals, but we are weak at inside linebacker, or whoever is schemed to played the center of the field 5-10 yards deep.

Give the ball to Daniel.

the only reason Payton came back for one more year is to break Favre's record... that is all

This.

Alex Smith is horrible and the team is good enough they won't find a better QB in the draft without luck. That Denver D won another game and might be the only reason they get in the playoffs(don't see it).

He only needs about 1K yards now. Whether he wants another year after this, or not, this is it for him. Dudes arm is cooked.

A little history on Chiefs QBs

The Chiefs have only drafted 1 QB in the 1st round in the 56 year history of the franchise(Todd Blackledge in 1983)

The Chiefs have never had a QB that they have drafted win a playoff game for them

The Chiefs have not won a game(regular season game) in 27 years with a QB they have drafted

The one time in the past 25 years that the Chiefs held the #1 draft pick(2013), the top QBs in the draft were EJ Manuel, Geno Smith, Mike Glennon, Matt Barkley, Ryan Nassib. Yeah....

Peyton will throw for 1,000 more yards this season so it doesn't even matter if he comes back or not!

can't stop laughing. took 5 turnovers for a miracle win against the chiefs.
I honestly don't know how the Broncos didn't win by 3+ TDs with getting 5 turnovers.

Chiefs fans are irate this morning over losing(and rightfully so), but how are we even in the game at the end with 5 turnovers? That just doesn't happen.

If anything, that game showed me that both the Chiefs and Broncos have glaring flaws, and may both be staring down 8-8, 9-7 type seasons. The Chargers might be the best team in the West this year.
