It's a trademark look that he's comfortable with and embraced. He's immediately recognizable and having a flaw makes people comfortable with him.

Back in the 80's Jennifer Grey got a nose job and a lot of people would say it ruined her career not only because it was a bad nose job, but she immediately went from having a unique look to being just another pretty hollywood actress.
