Why do you think defensive holding results in an automatic first? A yardage penalty alone isn't enough of a deterrent. Depending on where the ball is thrown, it isn't necessarily 3rd and short. And forcing a team to rerun a 3rd down play isn't enough of a deterrent for a defense to not just maul your ass.
