Never saw arrival. In my defense, I saw American hustle on an airplane. Lois lane is pretty big but not exactly the lead in man of steel. Also there's a chance I saw this on an airplane too.

Arrival was lame and over hyped. Maybe my least favorite of his films.
Thought there was a sci film movie 5 years ago by him with an all female cast getting stuck in cabin/force field.

Contact is a very good movie based off an insanely good book.
Arrival is a very good movie based off one of the best pieces of short fiction written in our lifetimes.
They're roughly equal if you ask me. Contact is a lot more of a "hollywood-ized" movie, though they did ham up the ending of Arrival a bit. The short story has no actual climax.
Maybe what you really mean is that Arrival needed some Jeff Goldblum?

Side discussion:
I will go to my grave saying that Independence Day is the most realistic first-contact movie ever made. The aliens make the most sense (space locusts), their tactics make the most sense (taking out comms and population centers first.)
Also, the fact that dirty raver hippies would try to greet the space locusts in peace and that American scientists secretly knew about them for decades are both very believable plot points. That the aliens inevitably underestimate humans' ability to fuck up computers and kill things is also spot-on.
The second most realistic first-contact is Half Life 2. The humans concede almost immediately, then the aliens find the biggest douchebag puppet on the planet to put in charge of the neutering of earth.
