All the divine beasts end up being are oversized shrines that you can flip on their sides. It's weird because BotW is so polarizing for me internally. As far as the overworld goes, it is the quintessential Zelda. Not since the jump to 3D have they been able to capture the feel of LttP and the original until this one, and it does it in spades. And I love all the call backs to the previous games that are in there.
However, the other pillar of Zelda, the dungeons, is severely lacking. The Shrines are really cool, but they are just small puzzle rooms or a boss arena to fight a guardian in. I'm not sure if this was just a time issue and they wanted to nail the overworld more than anything and just ran out of time, or if this was just a conscious decision on their part from the get go.
And then mechanically, they can't seem to get out of their own way. They have tons of things that are just cool. The world's design, layout, and feel. I like the actual combat itself. The progression system works for me and finding the shrines to add to my power just feels natural. However it's all soiled by this obsession with making this a survival game. Extreme weapon decay is ok... if I can make the replacements. This game, however, the only way to get weapons is as drops or in chests, so having weapons break as frequently as they do is a major pain in the ass. Eventually it kind of levels out as weapons finally start to last more than just a battle or two, and the master sword being indestructible (just has to charge). But the beginning hours of this game are really frustrating in this regard. And then Weather affecting your ability to climb is huge, since you are doing at least some climbing about 80% of the time. I cannot count how many times I've fell due to rain just settling in and I'm a million feet off the ground and have to glide down and wait for it to end to start it all over. It's not hard, it's just a pain in the ass. And then mounts are way too squirly and you can't really call them anywhere unless they are within earshot of your whistle or you go to a stable.
It's still a great game, but the design decisions I listed above keep it from being an all time classic in my mind. But at least it has made me utter a phrase I haven't uttered in almost thirty years: fuck wizrobes, fuck them right in the ass.
