I was a manager at Babbage's during the 90s. That's all you to need to know about selling used as new.

Question : Do I pick up a switch OLED for the BOTW sequel or wait for the inevitable ROM and play it on PC w/ an emulator? That's how I played the 1st one ( it was a wii emulator but you get the idea). I am asking is the switch worth the $$$ for the 1st party games?
I don’t really care for the switch, but my son has one. It is the best console for exclusives, hands down. They have a lot of IPs you can’t play anywhere else, without stealing them obviously. No other console has a massive amount of high quality exclusives like Nintendo.

Nintendo really lives in its own space without a doubt, and has its own exclusives peculiar to its ecosystem. We really live in the best world, IMO, where each of the Big Three has its own distinct approach it their space driven by their limitations that has benefits for gamers:

-Microsoft/Xbox- Able to compete on hardware/graphics but is hamstrung on the exclusive front, as everything they make/own will end up on PC due to their relationship with Windows. So rather than passively accept that, they lean into heavily with Gamepass, leveraging Microsoft's resources for content acquisition and offering tons of value for the subscription model.
-Sony/PS able to compete on hardware/graphics but doesn't have to feed Windows/PC, they have leaned into exclusives and turned out now a dozen? killer IPs that have an amazing quality stable. Also able to leverage Japanese software makers and market. Doesn't have the content/value to deliver like Gamepass does but do have their own Gamepass like offering.
-Nintendo- Not able to compete in hardware, but having IPs that date back to the beginning of the arcade era, they have turned their inability to compete graphically into a gameplay focused tour de force of some of the biggest and best consoles and games in history. Do they even care a Gamepass like offering? I think they just print money instead.

Each one has their own approach, their own bailiwick, their own forte, and there isn't a console among them I wouldn't own.

I really wish Nintendo would go the Sega route and just publish games and forget the hardware.

Nintendo still has some of the best IPs on the market, but are drastically held back due to hardware limitations in my opinion.

Also, the games come out at such a snail pace, that I know I might not ever live to see an actual next Gen worthy Metroid, Donkey Kong, or one of many other exclusive titles.

Me too. They do have the biggest 1st party IP pool of the big 3 but I am not the target age group for a large amount of them. I decided to pass on the switch, I just don't see myself using it all that much when I have a PC and a PS5. I would essentially be paying $400 to play one game.

I wish Nintendo would just go balls in on technology again and not be stupid. Of course they haven’t done that since 1991 so I could shit in one hand and wish in the other and see which one fills up first.

Why would they do this? Their way they get the ole 2fer. One, selling the shit hardware, two, selling all the exclusives to play on that shit hardware.

That'd be a no'fer in my case, but I don't mind having an excuse to not add even more games to my backlog~ 1080p/60+ or bust

Because there is obviously an untapped market of gamers that like good graphics and high frame rates who grew up on Nintendo games. Release a system that’s actually somewhat modern instead of twelve years behind with all the IPs people like and you gain even more of a player base.

It would then be a 3fer. One, Sell good hardware. Two sell exclusives to play on the good hardware. Three grow your market share.

I am certain I'm not the only one, but I am not buying a new machine that has 1/3rd the power of current consoles to play only 2 to 3 titles.

Nintendo has some great exclusives and IPs, but to play only 2 to 3 titles and then be forced to buy another new Nintendo console to play the next 2 or 3 is stupid to me. I'm sure there are some great new Nintendo titles to play, but I'm just not buying a new console to play them.

The OLED should have been a Switch Pro at a minimum. I bought my switch when Octopath 1 came out and then picked up the backlog when they went on sale, but I was glad when Octopath 2 simultaneously released on Steam and would honestly prefer if they could at least match 1080/1440 and not force their studios to work downwards.

The current strategy seems to be working just fine for Nintendo. The Switch is the 3rd best selling video game console of all time and ahead of anything from Sony or Microsoft recently. Why change the formula?

I feel like you didn't read my post at all. Like I said...grow the market share. If an underpowered handheld like Switch can sell great, a more powerful Nintendo handheld would sell even better. Gamers would like better performance...Nintendo execs and shareholders would like to sell even more and have yet another console on that top ten list.

What's the downside of making an even better system with all their exclusives?

Nothing, but I imagine they feel very comfortable for the systems to be at the $300 price point, as nothing they have needs to be compared to a PS5 or Xbox. Would a more powerful one still cost $300 now? I gotta think so, so I imagine that is what they are working on.

Cost most likey. When they are already doing so well without needing cutting edge hardware why bother? They dominate the market as is , how many people are not buying a switch due to lack of power? The steam deck isnt selling Switch numbers id think.

The switch handheld is what? Like $200? Prob costs them like $25 to make. A lot easier pill to swallow for a parent to buy their kids rather than a $1000 handheld.

Nintendo hardware has pretty damn reliable imo. I’d give them $500 for a top flight system. I’ve also owned every Nintendo system. Can’t say the same for the others, but I used to basically pc game or Nintendo game. I’ve slowly settled back into the console world because…I don’t have a good reason. Laziness and consumerism. I haven’t put anything into my pc since 2018 or 2016. I play FF14, last epoch, skyrim and shit that’s old on my pc.

Would it? I think you'd be surprised about the down-market reach of cheap hardware. I'm very sure Nintendo has an entire department whose job it is to optimize sales vs develoment costs vs COGS.

The switch lite is $200, can’t be docked so always 720p. Normal switch is $300, oled switch is $350. Both of those are 720p, 1080p docked.

I’m not advocating for a 4K oled switch here, I think a 1440p would be fine, or even a 1080 switch that can run at a decent frame rate. The current system can’t even run games developed exclusively for it without really shitty performance/frame drops. To me the frame drops is the part of the system which is trash to me.
