Have you watched the Red Letter Media reviews of all three movies?
Yup. Funny as shit those guys.

It won't suck any worse than the Star Trek reboot movies sucked. It will have big giant space ships, laser guns, lens flare, new storm trooper uniforms, fan service callbacks to New Hope and Empire, and overly contrived moments that serve to remind us of our humanity. It will be brightly lit, well produced, and agonizingly edited.
This.

My theory is Lucas is the type of person who really thrives only when a fear of failure is their primary driving force. With A New Hope, studios were extremely reluctant to get behind the movie and still figured it was going to be a flop. Lucas knew he had to prove both his vision and himself as a filmmaker, and that motivation continued into the next two movies since Lucas needed to prove it wasn't a fluke and that he could deliver on a saga. When the prequels came along, Lucas had nearly two decades of people patting him on the back and calling him a genius. There was no risk because everyone knew the new Star Wars films would make a massive amount of money no matter what. And, unfortunately, given Lucas' massive success so early in his career, he's unlikely to ever be in a position again where he's pushed the same way.
I see people say that. but I don't think its true.

Look at the documentaries, like was mentioned before.

Check out the cast and crew talking about George on the original series. he was always complaining, never satisfied, etc. And of course, the Special editions later.
then ask yourself, was he just a perfectionist? or do he really not like the original series, and think it was all wrong?

No artist is ever really satisfied with their old work, and often current work. sure enough. but the special editions... That goes beyond. That gives tell that he doesn't understand why they were successful in the first place. And that he really didn't like the Originals. Its like Stephen King having The Shining remade twice because he didn't like Kubricks.

So, yeah. in the end success gave him too much power. Originally he had to let others do their jobs, because they knew better and time and money would have run out.

there is also the thing that when you are young and poor your brain is basically on overdrive and able to do things that you will simply not be able to do later in life. if we ever get human cloning and mind transfer down to a science, everyone should perpetually relive their 20-28 year old lives over and over

Or its like the Brad McQuaid thing, he surrounded himself with talented people and put them to work on his "vision". When left to recreate that success after he was given all the credit, he fell on his face.

So filming starts in May and the movie is set "30 years after the end of Return of the Jedi" and will feature familiar faces as well as a trio of new leads. They note that the only person cast so far is R2-D2 (playing himself)

About damn time. Hopefully they will release the original movies on Bluray or DVD without all the "special" (read:retarded) crap added.

Some stuff was cool that they added. Like the stuff with Biggs before the battle of Yavin. They were rare though and not always wanted.
Although some stuff wasn't bad most of us who actually saw the original three in the theatre want the original theatrical versions. We don't care what Lucas wants to do to the movies, just give us the ability to watch them as we originally saw them and loved them. It's why I will only watch the 2006 DVD release with the crappy port over of the Laserdisc of the original movies.

I think it is simply a matter of him having been more constrained by outside forces and other people with the originals. Budget constraints ... boundaries of special effects technology that were less yielding ... the studio being more insistent in it's oversight ... creative collaborators who were in a position to have more of an impact on the finished product. All of these worked to reign him in from some of his "creative" impulses and for that reason alone he probably holds the original trilogy in less higher esteem than the fans do.

The prequels and to a much lesser extent the Special Editions were the product of a Lucas unbridled from all of that and the results speak for themselves.

I disagree. They made for excellent fodder for multiple red letter media reviews that resulted in hours and hours of laugh out load entertainment.
Maybe I should post this in the Jimmy Rustler thread, but I pointed this out to a couple I know cos I also thought the RLM reviews were fucking hilarious. When I asked them about it later I found out they didn't like it and were freaked out by the kidnapped woman in the "you don't make fun of things like that" kind of way. Some people are too serious for their own good.
