I'd say that for the most part, the effects of the original trilogy still stand up today. That's a difficult thing to say. CGI generally outdates itself pretty quickly.

Lasers, spaceships, hover cars/bikes, even the aliens are still pretty believable. When they went and added all the cgi crap, it took away from the movie because if its obviousness. Luke racing across the desert was realistic, while anakin racing was not.

I saw a clip once where they had a sock puppet making fun of the new cgi, and that's what it felt like.

Well CGI has come pretty far since the last Star Wars prequel.

Stop motion animation, and large models really aren't needed anymore.

It really comes down to the artists and the production crew anyway. They have the tools now to make everything super realistic. If they fail on that it has nothing to do with CGI limitations.

I think a clone wars movie would be a vast improvement over the prequels.
yeah.... you're right
i mean,ANYTHING related to Star Wars is better than those 3 piles of shit.

oh....and i know CGI helps a lot but i think pratical effects are so much better.

If they try to go for a female Han Solo it could be... interesting.

If it doesn't end up justifying an 8 part mini-series by Red Letter Media detailing how JJ Abrams channeled his inner Lucas to consume the souls Jedi toddlers, then there is no God.
Even if the movie sucks, that will be worth it. Win/win.

The more George Lucas stays off the project, the better it will be. This guy is a nightmare to work with, a bad producer and an awful director.

The news that has leaked out over the past few months makes me a bit anxious, especially Kennedy's wish for a delay being turned down. I do not want this to be rushed. But the talk of 9-12 films, not including stand alones is quite amazing to say the least!

I will watch all the films, in the cinema, regardless of how they turn out (just as I did with the prequels) but I'm holding my breath. I feel a bit like the parent of a child who is taking part in a big sports event. If the films are awesome then it will be like my kid is in the (real) Olympics, but if they turn out like the prequels then it would be more like my kid taking part in the special Olympics. I'd show up cos it's what you do, and tell him that he's my specially little baby, even though deep down inside I'd have wished for a different fate.

As with the debate here on models vs CGI, I do love me some *well done* stop motion models. The originals were simply utterly amazing, and still are in my opinion. And while CGI has come a long way since the prequels it does have a tendency to be over used. Gravity was very believable, but in my opinion CGI is best used for backgrounds, while real sets/models for closeups and interactions. I still cringe when I see back stage footage from the filming of the prequels with the actors having *only* green screen around them and nothing to relate to.

If the new films do turn out to be awesome I will forgive Lucas for all his faults.

...except for pasting Hayden Christensen over Sebastian Shaw in the redo of Jedi. He will burn in hell for that!

there's an old saying with special effects artists. if you get to the end of the movie and you see the credits listing who the special effects artists are and you say to yourself, "uh... they hired all these people? for what? there was hardly any special effects! what a waste of resources!!!" then you've done your job.

when people saw the original trilogy, everything felt real. it looked real, it behaved real. it was dusty and dirty and broken. the prequel trilogy is shiny and sterile. huge difference.

Almost exactly what RedLetterMedia said. You know a film is shit when a 1.5 hour review of the film is many times better than the actual film being reviewed.

He's going to burn in hell for not just that but completely fucking up his original movies with all the needless crap he added as well as the crap he added that makes you want to poke out your eyes and break your eardrums.

Disney still has not done the ONE thing I and many other fans are desparately wanting from them and is way more important than new movies. We want the original trilogy released on Blu-Ray as they were back in 1977, 1980 and 1983. Remove the crap Lucas added and you will have a huge legion of fans and you'll make a boat load of $$.

Well, in defense of the prequels, the galaxy hadn't had war for hundreds of years so the ship designs were all form over function. Even the guns looked like toys.

I more have a problem with CGI aliens animated like cartoons, or the painfully obvious "swinging through empty air" bits where Jedi are chopping up CGI droids without any actors stand-ins.

In other words, the problem wasn't CGI, the problem was the director.

EDIT: IMO, a worse example of big-budget CGI gone wrong is The Hobbit. Star Wars was breaking new ground; by the time the Hobbit came around people had a better idea of what works and what doesn't. Cartoony fat Goblin for the fucking lose.
