Yeah, probably something like that. In the article I read about this they had some NK specialist mentioning that both the ex-gf and Kim's current wife used to be in this same pop group. And that Mrs. likely was rather displeased how her hubby's ex still had such prominence on national level. So, possibly a cat fight that just escalated more than is usual.
I have a link to it, and seriously, pron my ass. It's North Korea's Got Zero Talent:

Sadly it makes me think of the scene in V for Vendetta where he's making the harmless parody of Chancellor Sutler and you're thinking "This fucker is done".

After watching that video I completely endorse his decision to execute anyone that was involved with it.

The dream team of NK diplomacy is obviously Dennis Rodman and President Carter. With both of them going at once, nothing could possibly go wrong.

Someone put it this way... it would be as if some secret service guys walked into a full assembly of Congress and dragged Joe Biden out, had him on trial a week later, and executed him immediately

North Korea. The gift that keeps on giving
also Joe Biden is Barack Obama's uncle.

Obviously Kim Jong or whatever is flexing his muscle and showing that he and only he is the supreme leader. He pretty much televised the whole event from his arrest, to his trial to show the not only his peeps but the world. But on the flip side he is showing how the regime has infighting and is not the tight knit unit that his father tried to portray for decades.

North Korean Blood Feud is 'Richard III' with Nukes - The Daily Beast

The North Korean state media has reported that Jang Song Thaek, once thought to be the No. 2 leader of the country, was executed. A special military tribunal had found him guilty of treasonous activities and other crimes. Never before has Pyongyang announced the execution of a member of the ruling Kim family. Jang, 67, was married to the aunt of the country?s leader, Kim Jong Un.

Why did Kim have Jang killed? It may have been personal. Jang introduced Kim to his eventual wife, Ri Sol Ju. According to a growing number of accounts, Jang also had an affair with her. Furthermore, there are reports that Jang and Ri were somehow involved in a sex tape. In any event, she has not been seen in public since October. Kim Kyong Hui, Kim?s aunt, supposedly approved the execution of her husband. Most of this narrative remains unconfirmed, but this storyline makes understandable Kim?s surprise?and unprecedented?decision to put to death a family member. Moreover, this narrative explains the charge against Jang of ?womanizing.?
I dug this up and it seems hilarously related

Dennis Rodman back in North Korea this week despite political tension
(Reuters) - Retired basketball star Dennis Rodman will return to North Korea for a third time on Thursday despite political tension surrounding the execution of leader Kim Jong Un's uncle, trip organizers said.

"It's certainly safe, even when there is a bit of disruption like there is now ? a bit of trouble or chaos ? there's even more need for cultural or sporting exchanges," said Rory Scott, a spokesman for Irish bookmakers Paddy Power, which has arranged the trip.
The real question is, why are Irish bookmakers footing the bill.

Korea Execution Is Tied to Clash Over Businesses - NYTimes.com

North Korean military forces were deployed to retake control of one of the sources of those exports, the rich crab and clam fishing grounds that Jang Song-thaek, the uncle of the country?s untested, 30-year-old leader, had seized from the military. In the battle for control of the fishing grounds, the emaciated, poorly trained North Korean forces ?were beaten ? very badly ? by Uncle Jang?s loyalists,? according to one official.

The rout of his forces appears to have been the final straw for Mr. Kim, who saw his 67-year-old uncle as a threat to his authority over the military and, just as important, to his own family?s dwindling sources of revenue. Eventually, at Mr. Kim?s order, the North Korean military came back with a larger force and prevailed. Soon, Mr. Jang?s two top lieutenants were executed.

The two men died in front of a firing squad. But instead of rifles, the squad used antiaircraft machine guns, a form of execution that according to South Korean intelligence officials and news media was similar to the one used against some North Korean artists in August. Days later, Mr. Jang himself was publicly denounced, tried and executed, by more traditional means.
