Notre Dame Manti Te'o dead girlfriend a hoax

His dad was apparently a big control freak especially after his deal with BYU and often brought up interviews how Te'o would do XX just to spite BYU. I wonder if he went overboard on the PR end.

The guy who did the interview they keep playing was on ESPN this morning. He said there was no way to check up on the girlfriend angle except ask for a death certificate, that's some good investigative reporting there. Why don't they just publish the releases beacuse that's all it is.

Just caught a blurb on the radio a few ago but apparently ND loaned out their videogrpaher for a cancer fund raiser in the name of this fake girlfriend, a couple of days after the title game - or 2 weeks after they knew she didn't exist lol.

This story gets better the more details that come out.

The details are so ludicrous in that article that I couldn't help but wonder how Thamel didn't stop the interview and ask 'are you fucking kidding me?' in a michael caine voice.

Having had my team lose the title game last year the one thing you want is something else to come along so people stop talking about, this probably isn't what ND had in mind.

What I love is all the CFB sport writers making excuses on why they did not catch this. Not to mention all this pub is making Deadspin look legit (they already were, but some (sportswriters) scoffed at the site by politely ignoring it).

That's the big story here. Deadspin exposed this story and made the mainstream sports media look like total idiots. And good for them. SI and ESPN are jock sniffing, sycophantic, soundbyte generators. Not journalists. Deadspin and especially Yahoo have broken more actual sportsnewsin the past year than any traditional outlet. T'eo's story itself is entertaining as a macro level ultra troll job, but the real story is how duped the media was through out the entire process.

Deadspin is really who the mainstream "reporters" should be angry with, and they are, they hate online news and have spent years defensively belittling it. But when it comes down to brass tacks, they can't go toe to toe with Deadspin because they can't match blows with the profanity and pure aggression that is welcome on Deadspin but won't be allowed by network bosses in retaliation. So T'eo will be the one taking the heat.

The media is going to lay into this kid relentlessly, especially the more it comes out that he was in on it. They won't let up on this well through and beyond draft day because he made them look like fools. The NFL won't give a fuck about this stuff, its a glorified college prank that spun out of control. Not enough of a problem to hamper drafting a top ten, potentially once-in-a-franchise hall of fame, type talent. But the media will harp on this for potentially the rest of his career because they are petty and insecure little weasels.

I just can't believe Notre Dame is playing along. There is zero percent chance he gets away with it. Someone on the internet is going to blow this thing up utterly if deadspin or a pissed off Pete Thamel don't do it first.

I don't think it's a problem specific to SI or ESPN but rather all news media outlets in general.

Nobody wants to spend time or money running down stories or doing investigations. It's cheaper to just wait for somebody else to break a story then run with it. When there is nothing to report they just resort to gossip.

Most profitable business model working as intended.

Ok, after reading that I actually kind of believe him. He just comes across as so naive and duped by the whole thing in that interview.

If it was up to him, why the fuck would he kill her off immediately after his grandmother died? That would be so disrespectful. Either way, whoever decided to kill her off then is a real piece of shit.

So, you think this guy didn't visit his girlfriend in California on his way back to Hawaii on summer break, despite her being in the hospital in a coma for 2 months and spending hours on the phone with her just so she could hear his voice and breathe faster?

I'd be really surprised if he wasn't in on it, but at the same time he is Mormon. We're talking about some of the most naive people on Earth here, so I'm hesitant to rule out the possibility of him just being completely oblivious.

I'm rooting for him just being gay and trying to cover it up. That seems like it would bring the most lulz.

I couldn't believe on Mike and Mike how pussyfooting they were about the story. Granted Mike and Mike is the worst sports radio show behind Cowherd but their reluctance to call this as bullshit astounded me. Then more ESPN talking heads kept talking like what Te'o was saying was 100% fact. I guess innocent until proven guilty but I'd say Deadspin has a pretty rock solid case.

Its not just M&M, everyone is trying to walk the line until T'eo inevitably confesses. On the off chance he wasn't in on it they can say they believed him all along. But when the truth comes out they get to acteven moreshocked and indignant about the deception. The self righteous and over important rhetoric can then commence in earnest.

I've actually come around a bit on the Cowherd radio show (I can at least stand it during commercial breaks of a show I actually like), Mike and Mike on the other hand, fuck no.

There's a lot that doesn't make sense either way you look at this story. It will be interesting to see what happens when someone gets a hold of the Tuiasasopa (or however the fuck you spell it) guy. That's the good thing about this story, the truth should definitely come out.
