Part of me wants to start studying Math recreationally, especially since we have so many resources available now, but...I'm probably too lazy to ever actually follow through.

Highest class I ever had to take was Business Calculus btw (which is a joke).

To be serious here for a moment, since you're from the Misc. If you want a serious thread you probably want to post it in The Grown Up Stuff forum, where trolling, shitposting, and posting for the lulz is frowned upon. I can't promise it will get much traction, but if it does, it will be people actually interested in discussing the topic.

All the other sub forums allow various levels of tomfoolery, with the Rickshaw being at the opposite extreme end (NSFW and all).

I taught business calc once at a private university.

The chair called me up and said "are you doing proofs?". That was my realization.

You learned shortcuts for accreditation. Thats it.

Math is cool, weird, fun. Give it a try

I love maths.
Measuring in particular.
I'm a toolmaker by trade, a higher trained fitter and Turner or machinist.
I work as an engineer now.
Removing materials to get the required dimensions takes lots of knowledge and skills with maths. When machining I work to microns. 0.001mm
Sometimes I machine thing wrong on purpose to get the correct dimensions when the material has stabilised.
Ambient temperature, material temperature, machine type and cutting tool all make this a mega calculation in your brain as you go.
This is one of my favourite books.

It's basic, but tells the story of how we go to where we are in how we measure things.
Also, this bothers me.

Bad teachers teach shortcuts. I teach mathematical proof to 11-16 year olds.

Sometimes shortcuts are too convinient to not use, but you explain why they work as more difficult problems will require that knowledge.

I think most teachers don't explain what sin, cos and tan are though. I do!

yes i have freckles

but i can count on one hand the number of professors I had that actually seemed to care enough to provide real insight

not knocking educational institutions in general

my favorite mathematics professor, i was a junior at the time, always talked about how he loved what he did and was very passionate

he now has been published by springer and i'm very happy for him
