Having the songs performed that were nominated makes sense. I think it's a good way of recognizing them even if they don't win. It just seems like they keep coming up with new excuses to stick other performances in though.

As far as Robin Williams goes, I sort of agree, but understand why they don't. They don't want to show any favoritism or elevate one death over any other. Giving Robin Williams a bigger memorial during the Oscars means any other high-profile actor that dies has to get something similar or people will feel they're being snubbed. As it is, devoting more time of the show to Williams would no doubt have people complaining that something similar wasn't done for Lauren Bacall, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Harold Ramis, James Garner, etc. They tried to do bigger memorials a couple years ago, but people complained that it made the Oscars too maudlin and depressing.

I haven't seen the film yet, but why do you say that? Just a general dislike of the film?
I understand about people saying that "yeah, but if you do a tribute for actor X, you also have to do one for Y and Z." However, Robin Williams is an all time great. He wasn't 95 years old when he died. He was still relatively young and tragically took his own life. There are few actors in the history of Hollywood who could compare with Robin Williams' list of great movies.
Good Will Hunting
Good Morning, Vietnam
Mrs. Doubtfire
Aladdin
Dead Poet's Society
Awakenings
The Bird Cage
Jakob the Liar (one of his most underrated movies)
One Hour Photo
Patch Adams

And yes, there are other guys who deserve the same kind of tributes (like Harold Ramis) because there are certain actors, directors, writers, producers who are just more integral to hollywood than others.

You guys realize that it's the Academy Awards and that Lauren Bacall and Mickey Rooney died in 2014? If they are not doing something special for the deaths of two of the last legendary stars of the golden age of Hollywood, they will not do something special for a popular comedian from the '90s. That said, Williams actually won an Oscar and got nominated in three other occasions, while Bacall got nominated just the once very late in her career and Rooney four times without a win. They got a lifetime achievement awards though: 2010 for Bacall and... 1980 for Rooney! They mistimed that one!

man i'd totally watch the oscars if planet of the apes and transformers were in the running for best picture, the reactions in the audience would be amazing as they get announced

Death to Smoochy needs to be added to that list.

You need to watch Nightcrawler, that is a badass movie.
watched this tonight, was good although i think gone girl, grand budapest, and whiplash were better. birdman is the last one i gotta watch, doubt i'll enjoy/watch Foxcatcher, Selma, Imitation Game, Boyhood, American Sniper, or Theory of Everything.

I think you'd enjoy both Foxcatcher and Imitation Game. Those were the two best movies I saw last year. I watched Citizen four tonight on HBO. Fucking amazing. Snowden is not a traitor, he's a patriot.

Imitation Game is decent, but its so influenced by hollywood and inaccurate, its hard to take it serious. Cumberbatch always plays the same character (Typically) so you end up with Cumberbatch trying to studder

Yeah I liked those 3 better, as well, but I still really liked it. Birdman is ok, I think it is overhyped but I really like Keaton so whatever. I liked Boyhood, as well. As long as you can take it for what it is I think you will like it.

So you saw the other nominated films? Because Ida and Leviathan are several order of magnitudes better than Wild Tales. I laughed more during Leviathan's drunken pic-nic scene than I did in the whole of Wild Tales!

This is why those marketing campaigns are so big come Oscar time. Because the number of voters in the Academy is relatively small and skewed heavily towards people who are pretty distant from the creative process in each category. I mean there's as many people in the Public Relations branch as there are in the Animated branch...

Its an interesting thing in that for the Animated category you often get the most popular film for Best Animated Feature and yet in the live action categories you end up with more obscure titles rather than hugely grossing entertainment productions. Im gonna come right out and say it : Guardians of the Galaxy was a better movie than the Grand Budapest Hotel. There has to be some true value associated with actually entertaining people in the entertainment industry. I saw both and honestly I cannot fathom how GBH managed to get the best makeup oscar. Did the makeup in the period piece look nice? Yeah. But it looked exactly the same as Downton Abbey and I don't see the people who turn very 21st century appearing actors into 1920s period residents up for Oscars.
I loved GotG. I picked up my copy at the midnight release. I MADE my mom and her partner watch it. I saw GBH in the theater once. GBH is the better movie. No contest whatsoever. GotG is perfect for what it is and a fucking achievement considering how well received and popular it was/is considering the source material and having pulled it off there is nothing marvel could put out I won't see in the theater. But GBH is suuuuch a "better" movie.

Oscar for makeup going to GBH is retarded though. They did an absolutely amazing job with the makeup in GotG. However I can see GBH getting votes based on the fact that their makeup effects were neigh flawless and unobtrusive rather than look how well they painted this guy blue. I don't agree with it. But I can see the logic behind it. But then the small sample of voters provided does kind of throw logic out the window so fuck it.

Just watched Nightcrawler. Wow, that movie got fucked hardcore. Easily my favorite of the year. Beats the shit out of Birdman, Whiplash, Boyhood, Foxcatcher and Gone Girl.

What a travesty that it basically got completely snubbed on nominations, much less winning anything.

Or you just watched it last night and have over hyped it in your own mind.

It's a decent movie but I preferred in hindsight Whiplash and Gone Girl more.
