Playing POE2 all day has taken my daily electricity cost from £2 to £3.50+

once again being disingenous.
The govt did introduce a price cap but this was as early ago as 2018 under Theresa May, the idea was consumer protection by limiting what suppliers could charge. This was due to a disordered energy market that relied on people taking the initiative to switch suppliers, a big 6 group of suppliers that made it harder for challenger suppliers and people on prepaid meters being charged more etc.
The cap backfired after Ukraine got invaded because it based on the costs of the suppliers, so when wholesale costs spiked so did the price cap and essentially everyones bills were jumping multiple times a year as the cap constantly got raised. This meant that it became pointless to switch suppliers because every companies tariff was essentially the same, and for that reason suppliers stopped accepting transfers of customers.
The whole purpose was to limit the profit margins, but when the wholesale energy cost was effectively limiting profits to zero then the cap had to keep rising.
What the govt ended up doing in 2022 was actually subsidising energy bills via a "guarantee" that hard capped the previous regulatory price cap, but this only lasted six months.
The whole "I've fixed my prices" response is also disingenous because such price fixes don't last indefinitely, and when they expire they give you the option to fix again at a rate in or around e.g slightly hire the current price cap which bakes in some of the forecast price rises at the next price cap review. So you pay slightly more earlier in order to avoid a bigger increase in future.
The reality is for my 1 bed flat I was paying £49 a month for duel fuel in 2017, £42 in 2018, £59 in 2019 then £43 until November 2022 when it went up to £70.82. I am currently paying £90.52 a month and that left me with a debit of £142.11 which I recently had to pay to bring my balance back to zero.
