This is great. It's what I did too and it will take you a long way. I think at a minimum everyone should do this. This is basically what primal advocates but they also add in some tweaks and specifics: Avoid refined sugars, avoid wheat/grains.
Unless you have celiacs or are one of the unlucky ones that might be intolerant(http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed?t...2Fajg.2012.236) eating whole grains is not unhealthy. (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed?t...Fjn.111.155325andhttp://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed?t...Fjn.110.131375)

I do cheat completely from time to time, but even the most dedicated of us will get drunk and down some taco bell once in a while. Unless you're some pussy new age vegan fuck, or serious competative athlete.
Definitely. I plan to add things like white rice and potatoes when i go back to more intense conditioning.

My view is to try and see how you react to eliminating grains. Add back slowly and see if you dont feel better without them. as for research:

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000...522456636.html

All three tested negative for celiac disease, a severe intolerance to gluten, a protein found in wheat and other grains. But after their doctors ruled out other causes, all three adults did their own research and cut gluten-and saw the symptoms subside.

A new study in the journal BMC Medicine may shed some light on why. It shows gluten can set off a distinct reaction in the intestines and the immune system, even in people who don't have celiac disease.

"For the first time, we have scientific evidence that indeed, gluten sensitivity not only exists, but is very different from celiac disease," says lead author Alessio Fasano, medical director of the University of Maryland's Center for Celiac Research.

I heard and interview on NPR's "Science Friday" yesterday with a guy that seemed to make a lot of sense to me. He is a scientist, and according to him sugar is the big problem.

Here's the interview:

Here's the book:

Book Description
Release date: December 27, 2012
Robert Lustig?s 90-minute YouTube video ?Sugar: The Bitter Truth?, has been viewed more than two million times. Now, in this much anticipated book, he documents the science and the politics that has led to the pandemic of chronic disease over the last 30 years.

In the late 1970s when the government mandated we get the fat out of our food, the food industry responded by pouring more sugar in. The result has been a perfect storm, disastrously altering our biochemistry and driving our eating habits out of our control.

To help us lose weight and recover our health, Lustig presents personal strategies to readjust the key hormones that regulate hunger, reward, and stress; and societal strategies to improve the health of the next generation. Compelling, controversial, and completely based in science, Fat Chance debunks the widely held notion to prove ?a calorie is NOT a calorie?, and takes that science to its logical conclusion to improve health worldwide.

Check out what this doctor has to say about this fad diet:http://perfectformuladiet.com/plant-...d-distortions/

That's right...a doctor.
Hah thanks for that link.

The Perfect Formula Diet gives you a specific method to combine six kinds of whole foods to assure you are never hungry and are getting perfectly packaged nutrition. The four pillars of this eating plan are:

Vegetables
Fruits
Beans and/or potatoes (combined in any proportion)
Whole grains
The other two kinds of whole foods are:

Nuts and seeds
Herbs and spices
Should have gone with Forks over Knives. I didnt find that compelling either but it was interesting. They even found a guy who looked athletic as opposed to the stereotypically skinny fat vegans. It's on netflix I think.

Sugar is one of the big things I'm sure paleo gets right. Once you take a look at how much sugar we eat it's no wonder most people get fat. That's the issue with grains too though, refined grains like bagels, cereal and most breads give a big insulin spike and leave you hungry a short time after.

1. the paleo diet isn't necessarily a low-carb diet. you can eat all sorts of tubers and fruits

2. that perfect formula link is bullshit data used to peddle a vegetarian diet. oh, and most doctors think eggs are bad for you LOL

3. there is literally no reason for you to eat grains

Thanks for the effort in putting this together, Dashel.

I think there's a lot that paleo gets right, most notably its extreme refusal of modern convenience foods. I think if someone is looking to try a fad diet for a month, paleo would be a good choice as it makes a lot of sense. Those saying paleo is just a repackaged low carb diet must have missed the fact that you eat many fruit/berries.

However, in order for paleo to really be acceptable it'd have to be shown that a paleo diet would be better than a paleo diet + a couple daily servings of whole grains.

Granted the premise of the "cave-man" theme is silly, but a paleo-diet is essentially just a low-carb diet, OP disagrees with that statement, but "veggies" are low-carb when eaten in their natural form with very few exceptions(potatoes). It's no coincidence that keto and paleo basically end up with same eating habits. The fact that he put in a paragraph about keto fog contracts himself on the low-carb thing.
Sorry missed this one. Cant argue with any of that. Many people preach ketosis but I would say this is a big step away from something like Adkins which allows too much processed foods and doesnt stress vegetables and fruits. Primal Blueprint and other variants allows some dairy, rice and low GI carbs. But yes low carb flu is keto fog. I dont shoot for low carb myself it just works out that way if you avoid sugars and grains.

I agree with all of that. I'm still not sold on the no grains thing. I've been trying this for a couple of weeks and I can say I feel better. I dont know if it's the no grains, the reduced sugar or just a general focus on eating good quality food. I know that less cereal, pizza and bread is helping. Rice I think is fine in moderation. I do miss my oatmeal though. I'll probably add that back after I give this a full chance and see what happens.
