The more I think of it the more I believe I will have an issue with it not being "Everquest". A game like this where you are meant to spend a decent amount of time in it's world must have a couple of things, a community/strong player base and something immersive for that player base to get somewhat lost in and vested. We probably overlooked it when we played EQ but think about how much the zones, traveling, mobs, landmarks, and even music added to the experience. It sticks with you. It's not to say they cannot create a new world that is just as memorable but speaking personally i'm not sure how much i'll care. All these years removed and I catch myself playing the music time to time, watching the mysteries videos that's been shared, and popping in and out of progression servers.

I could be in the minority on this but i'm not sure making an "Everquest" style game is enough for me. I guess it will come down to the people and what kind of experience they will attempt to offer. If it's shallow, not sure if I will care enough to pay a sub or stick it out. I hope i'm wrong but just something I was thinking as I watched some of their videos. I just found myself not really caring too much.

It’s almost impossible to recreate that. Online gamers are assholes these days. Before you could socially blacklist them for being retards, but these days it seems 7 or 8 out of every 10 players are like that. So the community aspect will most definitely suffer for that.

They can probably replicate the world, the feel, and the music though.

Online gamers have always been assholes. But when you have a small community, if you're an asshole everyone will know.

Bringing back some of Everquests systems is cool. But they will never be able to recreate the community feel that Everquest had back then. Much of it was dependent on the tech of the times. No voice coms, or youtube, etc. Those days are gone.

Pantheon can still have a more intimate server culture if it wants to. But it would be something new.

I agree that I don't believe they'll ever be able to recapture the magic of EQ, because the memories we all have of that game (for better or for worse) were unique to that game and the time it was released. If they can recapture some of the things that made EQ fun, however (like sprawling dungeons, meaningful loot, player interdependence etc...) I think they could at least create a game worth playing for awhile. And to be honest, if it's a MMO that can keep me captivated for more than a month, I would consider that a huge success.

There were plenty of mega-assholes back in EQ and other online games.

Reality is, it's not 1999 anymore. After a few months everything will be on an online database, there will be no secrets etc. It's gonna take some crazy VR shit to ever be that emersed in a game again. There is still a place for this kind of game, something akin to EQ w/ QoL changes (TLPs, Vanguard's trial Isle etc), but man it is moving slowwwww.

And it's going to be a while before anyone gives a shit about VR. *sigh*

This is just another case of nostalgia, both on the players part and more importantly, on Brad's part. Brad, I can guarantee you, hasn't played ME3MP. He doesn't know how quick and fun it is. 20-30 minutes tops, and you're outta there. I can get on with my day. He's hasn't played D:OS II. He hasn't played anything that has come out in this decade, I can bet.

It's just like I've said before, and I'll repeat myself here... They play a game a long time ago, and consider themselves gamers. What they don't understand is that gaming is constantly evolving. Sure, we could be in need of another grindfest, as all things go in circles. But with all of the Korean MMO's around, I don't really see that happening. Plus with the widening of the audience, the wider the circle. So, it's gonna be less and less time before that shit comes back around again.

For the players, it's sycophantic and nostalgic mixed together. Sycophantic in the sense that they'd follow Brad if he went over a cliff. Nostalgia, I can get. But both of those two mixed? Whew. It's a niche inside a niche. Super-neckbeards.

Well, you obviously don't know shit about gamers right now if you think the average gamer plays for 20 to 30 minutes. Most younger gamers play just as much, if not more than we did. A game that takes several hours to get anything accomplished? That's right in a modern gamer's wheelhouse.

Pantheon won't be for the younger gen. It's for old fart gamers. And it'll be super niche, lucky to top over 100k active players imo.

A game like Pantheon will never hit it big with the younger gen. Social pressure on kids forces them to play the hottest titles, which Pantheon won't be.

But Brad can still easily have a successful game, it just won't be recognized by anyone.

Pantheon's audience will be self-selecting as long as they don't fuck up the marketing.

Visionary Realms should have their line in the sand, and do their best to avoid overpromises and attracting casual gamers looking for a modern, polished experience.

When (if) they finally get close to launch and get coverage, emphasize that it is intended to be a 'world' first and a 'game' second. Old-school, no-convenience, group-required MMO.

I honestly think there is a niche (a healthy one) for a game like Pantheon - but so many studios try to hype and pump box sales, and promise everything to everyone. Fuck that. You want a real community? Be honest and present the game as it is.

I had a lot of fun playing EQ as a teenager. Went back in my 20s and played it again, still found it to be the best mmo I had played and it had little to do with "nostalgia" that everyone carries on about. Everything I earned in the game meant more, was more cooperative, which made everything more meaningful and memorable. I see no reason to believe that younger gamers won't have a similar response, permitted it can attract enough of them in the first place.

This is basically what I was implying.
The game isn't going to attract a ton, it's too narrow in scope.
It doesn't have the "emergent gameplay" that people desire these days.
