*Pre-Alpha Footage.

Anyone that understands how games are made knows that many things change between milestones, especially between Pre-Alpha and release.

But you see, that's the thing with KS. Because YOU are the person paying for it, you have to see the progress, even if it's just a prototype. If the game was being privately funded, there would still be prototypes that look absolutely nothing like the finish product, you just never see them as the consumer.

Expand your mind.
Thanks for the pep talk, but we're on the same side of this discussion. We can probably also agree there are going to be judgements made on those screenshots, especially when one of them has a fucking comic book SLASH! in it. People aren't going to sit and rationally think through the nature of publicly funded game development and changes that will be made during various cycles. They're going to have a gut reaction, and the gut reaction right now isn't great. And for what gain, really?

You're right. We just need to be vocal to the community about it and make sure people understand these concepts because a lot of what they'll see and participate in, they've never experienced before.

As much as it's misleading for the average person, the use of Unity store assets at this point is fine for me personally. I'd much rather see them spending their time right now on game mechanics rather then art assets. The mechanics are whats important. I'd even be fine with EQ1 pre-Luclin graphics, lol, not that that would happen.

That said, that Sorceress model is nice! No complaints here. =p

I just hope there isn't a wild swing in art/modeling style when they switch from those Unity assets to custom stuff. Such a thing wouldn't go over to well with people.

You're right.. Brad can I get a refund? I need the money to throw at all these new mmos that's are using new ideas..
Words from the same person who criticized people for getting trailblazer packs for EQNL, because we had "no info". This kickstarter is barren of info yet people are putting money down yet this is totally different somehow

I was one of those also, but I will actually give a pass to brad and his team, because its a startup, brand new with a super small team and seemingly little funding. SOE is a huge corporation and should be flogged for charging for alpha testing.

Quick someone give me $10,000 dollars, so I can create The Sleeper!

This time the rules are different:
1. The fourth guard is only killable one week out of each year, and that week is random, so nobody knows when it will be each year.
2. When the fourth guard is killed, The Sleeper awakens, and rampages across the land for 2 hours killing every one before he chooses a random zone to hold up in
3. The Sleeper is then awake in that random zone as a raid mob (tuned to current content each year) for 1 month with a random 7 day +/- 2 day respawn timer and drops the best possible raid gear for current content each year
4. After the month ends, the fourth guard respawns, and the four guards march across the land in search of The Sleeper. These four guards are a roaming raid event (tuned to current content and dropping top raid content gear each year).
5. Everytime the four guards are killed, they respawn on a 5 day +/- 2 day timer back at The Sleepers tomb
6. If the four guards ever get to The Sleeper, they take him back to the tomb and he goes back in to slumber for another year.

I'll throw $100 in if Tony Garcia will explain to me in PM or otherwise where the fuck EQ2's story was originally heading, and what he had planned.

Have 0 interest in this game, but Vhalen is one hell of a storyteller. Shame those kids took over EQ2. At least tell me it was an alliance of Rallos Zek that took Sol Ro's shard and blew up Luclin in an attempt to assassinate Kerafyrm. God I hate EQ2 nowadays.

Seriously. I feel like I half read a book. Or worse was forced to read those Dune sequels by Herbert Jr. all over again with all that Ethernaut bullshit and the complete disappearance of Mayong who was clearly meant to be a huge player in all this. WHERE WAS YOUR STORY HEADING, SIR!

Yeah be sure to post so that Ladyvex can internet tough guy some more right after making fun of someone poopsocking, right after he let slip his parents give him year long subs to an online fantasy world for Xmas.
I don't know if pointing out that history is repeating itself, almost ENTIRELY the same way, is internet tough guying, but it was probably a better attempt than yours. I seem to have said something truly terrible to offend your delicate sensibilities.

I'm not being a bitch to being a bitch, I am truly astounded. I made the point about not paying for a WoW sub because if I actually HAD to fund it myself it might be harder for me to justify and play it, but I don't. It's easier to be less harsh on something that isn't directly affecting your pocketbook, though I've been plenty cynical and upbraiding about WoW in the last few years anyways.

We've been burned without KS, and with it. An MMO being funded in such a way does offend my MMO nerve endings. It's absolutely proper and fine to pay for a sub, which often has the tendency to act in much the same way: funding for a continuously expanding and updateable world. However, this is someone who has nothing left to his name but a game people remember from 15 years ago, but has plenty to diminish it in recent years, and people are throwing money at the project for the promise of a dream world full of lollipop flowers and gum drop houses and peppermint rivers.

I keep rereading the KS and all of the posts and I am just simply more and more flabbergasted. I was young as shit when I got into UO and EQ and it changeduniversallyhow I think about games, but I'll be damned if I'm going to float this guy's boat in an ocean of cash for promises that are just repeated from a failed project years ago.

I don't think there's been giant amounts of innovation in the genre, but I don't see anything to suspect that Pantheon will be the holy grail and those associated Dr. Jones and crew to save the fucking day from the nazi playerbase. Especially considering those hugely in favor of it have been largely malicious to actual new ideas in the genre that are good, but were part of other games deemed too "mainstream" or "casual". (Especially when all of those words are recognized in vastly different ways amongst various people.)

I'll take the rap for being negative; but at least I'm here in this bitch with actual reasons for being wary, instead of the fucking lame ass excuse of "WoW is for lamerz, it's so easyyy, give me something hard."

Because god damn, the hardest thing about EQ back in the day was finding a cleric whose computer didn't require them to face the wall to avoid video lag.

TL;DR: When he stops Peter Molyneuxing, I might be in this for more than just walls of text.

Not at all. First off, most people won't know they are purchased assets.
That and the mini-map are not things people should be worrying about.

I wouldn't worry about any of that stuff. As has been pointed out those pictures are almost completely "fake".
Sure, using it for prototyping and internal development makes a ton of sense. But, just to be clear here... we're cool with asking for $800k using promotional/marketing screenshots in which practically nothing was made by the people asking for said $800k? Wasn't even created by a contractor based on their vision. Just searched for 'cool looking skeletons' and called it a day.

Because that's what they are, promotional screenshots. Those aren't just 'prototype' screenshots anymore. Those are now, intended or not, being used as a representation of their work and craft. They are on Massively, mmorpg.com, Kotaku, etc etc. The fact that the average person doesn't know any better somehow makes it ok? I'm not so sure.

I think the entire game could be created using a mishmash of asset store models and still be awesome. After all, I don't think their target audience gives much of a shit about graphics. I do feel like the fact that most people DON'T know it and will make the assumption they've been modeling all of that since October is being used to their financial advantage. It's not even just Brad's company, I'm sure plenty of other projects have pulled the same trick. I'm not saying it is unethical, just that there should be some awareness of it.
