I'm just stunned there is so little interest in this. Were going to get another 10 wannabe WOW's if people do not support this.
How can this be stunning? They came to the Kickstarter with thoughts and ideas, didn't even have them formally typed up for christ's sake.

Most other Kickstarters, especially MMO ones, are mostly started by the actual developers who create and produce, and they have an actual beta engine to show off along with rudimentary systems in place.

These guys just have words, and out-of-the-box pieces glued together. It's like SOE's debut of EQN, when it became obvious they had nothing but the voxel engine purchased with some models thrown in.

What's hilarious is twitch chat and KS comments make this sound like it's gold. I understand having blind optimism but holy shit.
Honestly it makes me cringe what the fuck some of us backers would be dealing with in alpha if it did fund right now.

We may be a bit on the harsh (I call it realistic) side, but the entire KS thread is gushing about this video. It's beyond the pale.

Yeah like VH1 behind the music..
Yeah ex-fucking-actly, tell me about how crazy shit that happened while putting this together, tell me about the zone that never made it into EQ, tell me about what inspired you to get into MMO's in the first fucking place. Sell us on your fucking "Vision(tm)" at least then it's fucking watchable.. Tell me the story behind Frippy and how kicking snakes came to be.. Vu can talk about Sebilis and shit how it came to pass.. I mean if they don't have anything fake it with something entertaining, draw interest, there are a thousand ways to sell a fucking item, maybe they get fucked when it comes time to deliver but for now sell that shit.

Sure, they could have had all this pre-planned and worked out in advance, but grass roots companies learn grass roots lessons.
Grass roots? The only thing they have going for them is how they're all "MMO industry vets" who "totally know what we're doing". This isn't their first foray into things. Hell, this is Brad's third of fourth company that we know of.

So I'm going to just count my 375 as not spent now. Let's talk future.

He mentioned they have talked about if it doesn't fund going some route of getting other funding and still having pledges of some sort to be able to help out I guess directly through them.

They could go that route or they could go away, actually spend a few months putting some real shit together , put a PR plan together and relaunch kickstarter with lessons learned.

Bets on which way they go and which would be better ?

And this is why developers have always shunned public viewing of development, and created NDAs.

If the KS doesn't fund, I'd say they're dead. End of story. They might limp along with "looking into other funding sources" and what-not, but long term I don't think the game would ever happen at that point.

What they'd be best off doing is trimming the fat on some of the idea people, find passionate developers and artists who can work nights while working their day jobs, and come back in 6-12 months with tons of in-game footage of a starting city, a dungeon, a class or two half-way done, some actual combat and the systems working. It'd all be rough and needing polish, but it'd actuallyexist. Seeing is believing, and all that.

But I think people are just looking for paychecks to work on this game. I know I wouldn't give up my nights - I don't have anything I'm passionate about to that degree. I'm also not asking people for money on Kickstarter.

If they don't fund, they'll have to just keep taking a shot at it or give up completely. I don't think there's room for the in-between option of taking a few more months, applying what they've learned, then trying again. That would kill the only momentum they have. Let all those currently excited enough to at least partially fund this, keep being excited by funding it and starting to pay bills in the hopes of momentum and support growing faster than those bills.

This is as grass roots as it gets. At one time, maybe Brad walked into Nexon, NCSoft or EA and said "lets talk millions" but right now, they are just 10 industry guys in a garage taking their first crack at crowd funding.

He will either go this way on this Pantheon site.

or the "WILL MAKE MMO's FOR CASH" route like this.

Both will probably come to a 2nd kickstater down the road.. They already said they would prefer to do multiple rounds of crowd sourcing cash than go to a publisher. Those guys ask to many questions before writing checks.

There are proper ways to show off development and be transparent. And there are improper ways. You don't do a public demo of just farting around in the tooling. You do have a public demo with specific things to show and explain.

I demo software "publically" at least every two weeks (end of our sprint), as well as invite the product owner over to my workstation all the time to get immediate feedback. It's not rocket surgery. I don't ask her over to leave Visual Studio up and type and refactor, and maybe hit one of the cool ReSharper buttons!

Oh.... That makes my feelings sad.

Thankfully there are plenty of people who are passionate enough to give up their nights pursuing whatever dream they have. I say thankfully, because that's how we get shit to enjoy, since in almost every industry ever, one has to put in the work of a professional before anyone will ever treat you like one, much less pay you as one.

Yeah I was all for taking down the Kickstarter at first and had they done that in the first couple of days they might of been able to regroup and check back in a couple of months. That was before they reached out and got a ton of exposure through outside sources. All of these interviews and gaming sites, twitch, youtube stuff, won't be there if they took it down and came back. They had a window to shut her down and formulate a plan but that window is long past.

I don't know that grass roots means what you think it means?

It's an excuse for not having money - absolutely. It's not an excuse for lack of professionalism and inability to inspire confidence - which 10 industry vets should have tons of.

Ditto! I'm just a slave To The Man. But hey, gonna pay off my house next month (at 32, in a typical suburb), and I get to spend my evenings with my wife and child doing whatever we want. Okay, whatever the kid wants. I have passion, just not in creating software these days.

This is a fucking Kickstater, not a funded corporate game already in the works that people are "allowed" to be in beta.

They have to sell the damned thing , like it not , it's the main importance right now. If they are failing to do that , they don't get the chance to do shit.

A wife and kid you don't neglect/hate? That's giving up your nights, man!

I'm currently trying out the slave-to-the-man thing. It's not bad, but tiring. Am running out of things I've really wanted to buy/do. Mo money, mo problems, amirite?
