That's not a fair comparison. I think Xevy posted that his 0.2.0 campaign run took him 31 hours as a quite seasoned PoE1 vet and I'm willing to guess had done the PoE2 campaign multiple times before that 31 hour mark. What's the objective way to normalize retention numbers?
I'm unsure what you're asking/saying?

After the recent hotfixes, PoE2 is pretty fun to play, it's just very slow at the campaign level - especially until you get access to level 5+ gem skills. And the endgame still feels pretty lacking in content. I think that's probably fine for now and will feel better when you have all 6 acts rather than 1-3 x2. We'll see what retention looks like when they're cranking out 4 leagues/year and you have to do that campaign shit every time though. I think they're getting away with it, for now, because the game is still relatively "new".

I was responding to jooka's comment about poe2 having better retention than any poe1 league ever. While true, it's not a fair comparison. Modern poe1 has been optimized on both the player side(guides, tools, built up knowledge) and developer side(robust leveling skills, crafting systems). How do you normalize that difference out so you can truly measure the retention rate?

I don't want to look at 170k people playing poe2 0.2.0 on a Monday and have to wonder if it's because the campaign is so long and some players feel compelled to stay logged whilst at work just so they can flip items.

Ad populum is the same argument I can use to describe why call of duty or Taylor swift are great pieces of art. It's a logical fallacy in an argument about game design coming from the side of the player.

However I'll concede is does not help our hopium of getting through to the developers by hitting the bottom line

Whatever the reason, the high retention of players in PoE2 0.2.0 is a scathing judgement on the quality of video games in 2025.

I wonder if any of these players are giving GGG money? If it's just the original EA purchasers back for more, then who cares how many people are logged in or why?
Seriously, you would have to be completely retarded to be buying supporter packs or mtx right now, given their performance since release.

I'm not playing, but still kind-of interested to see how things pan out for GGG in the next 12 months. If they don't do something drastic about the shitty loot/progression/crafting, I don't see how it can succeed in the longer term. For someone like me (prefers SSF) it would make more sense to go back and play PoE1, and yet I have no interest in doing that.

Maybe?

But in the context of ARPGs in general, we're acting like PoE2 is complete dogshit while comparing it to perhaps the greatest APRG of all-time.

hm been having fun since the changes, maybe people getting psyched out by all the negativity but the game is 100% better than at 0.2 launch. Just being able to see all the rare mobs when you load up the map is such a huge qol it makes me want to actually play. Would stilll be better if each map had a boss but it’s a step in the right direction atleasr

They really need to pull back and work on some fundamentals now tho. The support gems were pretty disappointing and most unique as well, I’d like to see more interesting build options but hopefully that will come with time. Endgame also still needs work to be more engaging.

They 100% rushed this patch out to conflict with Last Epochs launch of a new season.

That was a bitch move, as Last Epoch wasn't even on many peoples radar.

The fact they keep releasing patches that have to have 20 hot fixes days into their new patch is ridiculous.

If they want meaningful, combo like play, then remake the game and call it something else. This will never be like No Rest for the Wicked.

They need to start patching in fun. So many systems are the antithesis of fun right now. It blows my mind how big of a step back they have taken in many regards.

The base is there, but Jonathan needs to take a 2 year vacation and let the team develop the game, as his " vision " fucking sucks.

They did no such thing to fuck w/ last epoch. You should go listen to Jonathan talk about it in his dropped frames interview
