Essence drain/new chaos skill of some kind looks pretty strong to me and I've been meaning to start a build using that for a while. I have a feeling it's going to be SUPER meta though, and I don't like the idea of playing FOTM builds at all.
Tricksters, Occultists and Inquisitors will all be FOTM I'm betting, with possibly Guardian/Heiro if the new holy skills are any good.

I had already decided a few weeks ago that I wanted to start this league with Armageddon Brand and CI, although with those patch notes I have a feeling ES in general is going to be more costly than before. Still, it feels like one of the easier stats to boost cheaply, as I was able to get over 10k last league without spending much at all. I'm trying my hand at creating my own build this time too (probably a bad idea), but there are a few things that I'm not totally clear on because of the distinction between self-casting your damage vs. brands doing your damage.
Do brands benefit from nodes that say things like "% increased fire/elemental damage" etc? I feel like they have to, but I just want to make sure.
I'm also assuming that brands count as YOUR spell damage, thus can benefit from leech to ES a la Light Eater. Is that correct?
How does spell leech to energy shield actually work? I know that ES requires a short period of no damage to start, so does the leeching you do during that time go to waste, or is it saved up and kept for a period of time? Same with any passive ES regen (including life regen that is converted to ES regen via Zealot's Oath), I'm assuming that regen is just sort of wasted until the "trigger" kicks in and your ES starts recovering. That's why I'm sort of worried that leech might just poof too if it happens a split second before recovery begins.
Finally, are there any brand-related uniques that people tend to look for? I've figured out how to use PoB for the build (even if it might suck), but trying to plug in equipment that isn't dream build quality is just killing me. I have no idea what stuff is common/cheap, what is considered "must have" etc.

I don't think it's gonna be worth trying to squeeze ED and soulrend into the same build. Probably better off using one or the other. Depends on what the soulrend gem actually ends up looking like, tho.
The ED buff seems pretty big so I wouldn't be surprised if it is meta and breath of the council will probably be pretty pricey.
ES regen, recharge and leech are all separate. Well, i'm assuming regen is separate from recharge. Recharge/recovery is the one that takes time to start. Leech works just like it does for life, you hit and start leeching based on your leech rate and leech amount. Regen should work just like life regen and be permanent but separate from recharge/recovery but again, never really messed with zealots oath so not 100% on this one.

I played it without a quillrain and it was pretty good through the acts - blows up all the bosses and the scorpoids so overpowered it still clears screens without it. You really don't need 40 stacks in the acts.
I was playing around with a ED/Chaos occultist last league, was considering trying something similar again. If they gonna be better that sounds right up my alley as someone that still knows SFA about creating a good build myself yet. I'll likely do the same as last, create one solid char that can carry me as far as I can go, and a bunch of alts that I delete multiple times while playing with PoB. It's like playing 2 games at once.
BTW yall are an awesome resource, understand most of what people are saying now at least.

How to make a good build: Pick a skill, use support gems (pretty standard setups for almost any skill based on skill type), get decent gear, put enough points in life/es nodes that random mobs aren't killing you.
The only stuff in this game that requires more than that are deep delves, elder/shaper/uber elder/uber atziri and maybe guardians depending on the skill. Even then, for the bosses it comes down to learning the mechanics and how to play the fight more than "my build isn't good" (barring builds that suck for single target).
I did everything but uber atziri and uber elder in delve with my fire nova mines char and it was nowhere near optimized and I could've done those too but I suck at the fights.

Yes to both of these.
ES leech/regen and ES recovery are 2 different things. Leech and regen dont have that recovery period and will instantly kick in.
No brand related uniques yet but dont be surprised if one gets added this league. Theres no real 'must have' gear for brands. Closest thing I would call to a must have is a shaper/elder ring to apply a curse on hit, Id suggest elder for Warlord's Mark.

Awesome, thanks. I guess I didn't realize that regen was always happening, probably just because my regen was so small I didn't notice it. And I've never had ES leech.
Thanks for the answers. Maybe I'll throw a tentative PoB up later for people to look at and tell me that I'm fucking retarded.

This is wrong.
you mean, ES recharge. When ES fills itself back up after a 2s pause(which can be shortened), that is RECHARGE.
"RECOVERY" refers to ALL forms of life and mana restoration. Leech is recovery, regen is recovery, recharge is recovery, gain on hit is recovery, life/mana flasks are recovery.

Just watched the 4 hour of Mathil and his bottle of wine reading the Patch notes. Pretty lulzy. He was a BIG fan of the top end and bottom end skill revamps getting a +1 or +2 damage change.
Still thinking I'm going Chieftan Flame Totem, but who knows. Looks like Trickster CI channeling is a free win right now.
