I'm guessing they added an splash to Essence Drain to help modernize it, dealing with the annoyance of hitting the fatty with ED. Feels like it needs just a bit more. Maybe make contagion instant cast?
Contagion feels great with Intensify+Inc AoE. I was clearing three screens ahead with it on high density maps. With trickster shit cast speed is pretty damn fast.
Thank you. I probably accidentally hit the + while doing something in my inventory and did not put 2 and 2 together when it tried to lvl up again later.
Definetly wish there was a way you could set what lvl to lvl a gem to and stop. At times when you are really expling you get 10 gem level notices at once.

Been playing it a bit. Trickster cast speed, pack size, and area of effect definitely makes a difference. I last tried it while leveling and it sucked. It's kinda hard to chain indoors, but it's damn good out doors where you can kinda herd packs together. Reminds me of D2's Cow Level or D3's Greater Rifts.
I would still prefer Contagion to be instant cast. I will likely play it long term as it has a better high end investment than soulrend. Soulrend seems to limit how far you can take based on it's mana cost and how often you have to cast it in sustained situation, almost requiring EB-MoM or Weave the Arcane.
Before, I do not think I had ever been higher than T11 maps. This league I just tried shaper for the first time last night. On my last portal I killed him... and then died to a stray cold ball. All I could do was stare at that memory fragment on the ground as I hit the release button. Feelsbadman. Oh well.. I think I got the timing down on his abilities now so should be good for next attempt.
I've seen people use it for Uber Elder so it shouldn't be that bad, although might requires some +lvl shit. And for bossing a bunch of people tend to switch gems(slow proj and what not).
Soulrend should have enough dps for end game bosses. Without fancy +level crafted bows/staves, you're going to be looking at 1-1.5M dps though, nothing impressive. No DoT build relies on one source of damage though. It's common for Soulrend builds to supplement with a 4L of Bane, ED, or Blight totems. All those will provide another 0.5 to 1.0M shaper dps, while providing some utility.
This is partly why I'm still considering switching to ED/Contagion. Since your clear skill no longer requires sustained casting, your options for supplementing your single target dps is much better. Thus, you can do a 4L of just plain Blight(no totems), which easily adds 1.5M shaper dps ontop of the 1M ED should already be doing. And those numbers are without crazy +level weaponry.
I tried the PS4 version briefly. It sure looks great on the big screen.
I want to like it - but since I am an older man, controllers are an enigma to me and it would take some getting used to. I dealt with it to play splitscreen Terraria with my kid, but it takes a while.
However, I think my true barrier of entry here is the price of all the tabs which I simply won't play without anymore. Guess I will wait to see if they have a PS4 stash tab sale and perhaps I may play some more, but without that I am out.
I’m leveling soulrend/bane. I plan to also set up either wither or blight on totems. My understanding is you need three of those to really do impressive dps. For some reason I don’t like how ED/cont feel.
I didn't like ED/Contagion while leveling either. And I still get that nagging feeling when I spend two casts to kill a pack that one soulrend or bane(or mostly any skill for that matter) would have taken care of. But, at the same time, get an outdoor map or the arcade memory fragment, you maybe have to cast both spells 5 times each. I would agree with Derkon
that you should only consider switching to ED/Contagion once you're in maps. Maybe even later, like your elder map farming strategy is in place and you can invest heavily into pack size.

How do figure 1.5M? At level 92 with a five link QotF, all chaos dmg nodes, GMP and Unleash swapped for Controlled Destruction and slower proj, a 4 link Bane running Malevolence, and 3 power/frenzy charges up I MIGHT hit 120k DPS. Also running double spell totems with ED. Half the time I can't kill temple architects fast enough to get a stone of passage and kill em before the time runs out. Way fucking slower than my Vortex build last league.

An extra link will help a lot. Slower proj does absolutely nothing for you. Soulrend does a TINY bit of damage on hit, but otherwise it applies a debuff that does damage. The debuff is not a projectile, thus slower proj does not increase its damage. Conversely, greater multiple doesn't decrease the damage. I'm not a huge fan of Unleash with Soulrend, just doesn't seem to help the clear enough while taking up a gem slot.
Why are you using ED with spell totems? There's no benefit to repeated applications. And I'm willing to bet the totems are getting the life regen.

Aiming ED does indeed suck, luckily you don't have to cast it much. It should last through a boss burn phase easily. Soulrend, you shouldn't really need to aim. 4L Bane with 6L Soulrend should push you over 1M dps with ok gear.
