I see they added a new anti-vehicle turret today for engineers, Gonna have to try that bad boy out tonight.

I started playing when someone mentioned PS2 in another thread. I actually ended up picking the right server, but the wrong faction (VS).

Couple comments and then maybe some advice.

I started with Light Assault. By far my favorite class in BF2 and 2142 was the spec ops; foot mobile, C4, very versatile, and a decent general purpose weapon that was good at range or CQC, but not better than specialty weapons designed for those situations (i.e. You could pick off non-snipers from a distance, and gun down them close in). LA seemed like a good match for my play-style.

It was hell. I struggled for a LOT for the first few days. I decided to hold off buying anything until I figured out what I wanted to do, and this made it even worse. I nearly quit when it looked like, early on, I would only ever kill anyone with the HA because of the added HP from the shield.

After a few days the game FINALLY started making sense, you pick up on the layouts, where people come from and the general lanes of movement and so on. At that point I switched back to playing more Light Assault, and now that I sort of knew where to attack from, where to flank, and where to run. LA is so damn tactical that unless you know the battlefield disposition you are just going to die, repeatedly, and without accomplishing anything.

I still am only a few days in, unlocked my first C4 and a pair of cheap sights. Things are VERY expensive. I am uncertain what gun to unlock first. I play VS so the choice is between slug-gun, shotgun, and VX6-7. I am really tempted to pick up the carbine first because it is more versatile and I can use it with an engineer. However, shot-gun seems to wreck multiple people up close, so I am not quite sure.

Second thing is I am in Europe, so my ping to Jaeger averages about 108ms. Not bad at all but my ping to EU servers is around 35ms, pretty much a third. The problem I have with the EU servers is that the people aren't very chatty or friendly. Often times on the EU server (Miller) I feel like I am playing solo even in a nearly full Platoon. That isn't to say that people are always great on Jaeger, or never talk on Miller, but there is a marked difference.

What I am saying is I like playing on Jaeger more, but I have a much better connection to Miller. Do you guys think the extra ~70ms is that big a deal? It didn't feel all that big a difference to me when testing. Thoughts
I love Light Assault so much. Almost nobody ever looks up. As for which gun you might want, this guy recommends the Nova with slugs.

Unless you want a shotgun, you don't need to buy any other guns. All the guns are *mostly* side grades with minor differences. If you're any good, you can easily dominate with infantry starter weapons. At some point, you'll want to get station cash for vehicles/weapons, as that is where the major differences lie between those who have SC and those who don't.

If you're not tied to a faction, make sure you try the other 2. Each faction has strengths and weaknesses. VS has crappy damage compared to the other two, but some awesome tanks. NC typically hit like a truck with anything but have awful recoil.

Nova slug shotgun is awesome, but shotgun cof in general is a bit high. I usually play Engineer and love the VX6-7.

Also, the new Engineer AV turret missiles are guided. Gonna be fun times when you have zergs of them.

Upgrade wise the big pull for me is my utilities as a medic and soon enough working on a mosquito or sunderer. As soon as I put a reflex sight on my starter gun it felt totally different and I was able to kill far easier. If the other attachments alter the effectiveness of guns so much I will gladly continue to do unlocks. I want to get the forward grip, maybe a better scope, laser sight etc. also I want a rocket launcher that will lock on. Do you guys suggest the annihilated or the air only/ground only and just use them situationally?

I'm excited to work on other classes be because you really can't just be one and call it good. Sometimes people need an engineer for repairs, or medic for Rez and heals, heavys to take down armor and air. They've all got their uses and being well rounded in all of them will be beneficial to your squad and outfit.

Might have to get the SMG, did fairly well with it on trial. Works for everyone.

Still since last patch having more trouble downing people wht the heavy assault 50 round GR-22S? Like just more than 2-3 round bursts spraying badly. Kinda interested to know the best NC LMG to try for maybe the more close in arena? Better Long range and Short range (no shotguns) options for LA/Engineer?

At one point I heard NC starting sniper was so awesome. Got the semi auto sniper yesterday on special,,,, massive increase in kills. Like find a good small/medium skirmish line and rack in crazy points with 2-3 kills every 30 seconds if my hands steady.

I think that engineer turret sounds a bit over the top, but I didnt get to try it yet. Shouldnt be guided imo. Can you dumbfire it too? As far as launchers are concerned, I have the AA lock-on that you can dumb-fire and plan to get the anti-tank too. I find being able to quickly fire a shot with it pretty important. From the calls for nerf the lock-both launcher is probably great too, though.

I enjoy sniping but so far the render distance is too unreliable to do it full time, at least in my experience. I hope they find a solution to increase that, even if that makes sniping more unfair to those with older computers (one of the reasons for the lower render distance in a recent video).

Trialed the new turret.

Long refire time, and heat at 80%-90% for 2nd shot (resulting in lockdown till 0% heat). probably 1 shot every 10 seconds sustained fire. I'm neutral on this, taken as as individual point.

Similar damage to lock-on rockets, roughly 5 shots to a tanks front. Disappointing damage for the drawbacks: the low sustained fire rate, for the locked in place to be sniper food, narrow turret travel arc.

No KILL-ME-PLEASE Neon fucking shield. BIG PLUS.

Similar locked down turret travel arc as to normal manna turret. Your perspective never changes from you at your turret. Meh, means the rocket never travels in a way that ISN'T away from you. You can chase down tanks, but can't really sneak in from sides or back for bonus dmg, or come back if you overshoot. It really just lets you choose: top hits or Side-facing-me hits. You won't be hitting aircraft other than by luck or their stupidity.

Rocket speed feels slightly slower than lock-on travel speed. Seems to be brighter and more noticeable to your target too. I had plenty of tanks start dodging after a single hit.

Lights up the night beautifully though. Firing down into the TI side gorge from crown you can semi-nape of the earth fly it well past Crossroads. Rockets fired from same position are visible until they visibly explode against the bio-dome in the distance (Of course, not a single enemy renders out that far anyways). You have no optics options, so good luck hitting stuff even at a third of that distance.

All in all, I'm disappointed and will probably still just jihad mines into tanks instead. At short and medium ranges, even with run time and respawn time, you're more effective and provide faster long term field advantage. At Long range, the turret provides good harassment. You'll get off 2-3 shots, they'll run away and repair. They earn more exp than you, your team gains some short term battlefield advantage.

It amazes me how little effort SOE's put into making "enlightened self interest" work, which would result in better pug play, and more fun for everyone.

Still, since anything's better than the festering pile of shit that is the Manna turret, I'll eventually buy it (when it goes on daily 50% off or into a decent package deal).

The Magrider got nerfed into the ground while the prowler got buffed to high heaven. VS has the worst empire specific tank.
People need to not impulse buy the new engineer turret as it will be nerfed soon as the FOTM is ideal for a F2P game.

If you are into infantry combat and you want to be unstoppable, be an NC maxx with shatter. Its so completely imbalanced inside buildings right now and Im surprised its been like this since beta. The only level 100 on Waterson is an NC maxx and the closest person is 95 or something.

Magriders still MANDATE lock-on launchers, anything dumbfire will still be strafed and nullified. That's still a very large defensive bonus that the other sides don't get.

Yes, Prowlers are now able to enter beastmode when they lock down and increase their fire rate. Still, an immoble tank is a dead tank in most cases. Its only the really good tankers who know their angles and can fire from the blindspots that are crazy deadly.

The NC max with dual shotguns is so very binary. At 0-20 feet, you win. at 21-infinity, you lose. TR's is good out to like 50 or 60 feet while burst firing. Vanu's seem connect easily at even longer range, but TTK is pretty bad.

All in all, all 3 are very lethal at inner-biodome level fighting. Still, 3 stock loadout dumbfires from suicide squad HAs and the max is down. Or a single C4, or 1 tank mine and a grenade, or 2 tank mines and a couple of bullets to pop them. If your friends play clean up with the rezer, then you're golden. Maxes are still ridiculously squishy.

5 will get you 10 that the lvl 100 didn't get that way in a max, he got that way as a lib gunner.

haha thats why I'm waiting on getting one. Or just for a daily deal.

VS has the worst empire specific tank.
The other tanks definitely got a needed buff. Magriders had a 1.7 win rate vs 0.6 and 0.7 for the other faction tanks in Tank v Tank battles.
After the tank changes, I would not go as far to say Magriders are the worst. I can still strafe around cover and saron snipe other vehicles from 2-3 hexes away.

Any hints that there will be a 2-3x SC sale this weekend? Would like to pick up a few guns...

Not that I know of but I wish they would do another one. Just keep in mind if they do another 3x SC weekend to get the cards from Walmart, you get so much extra it's insane.

Server we on and faction?
Jaeger/TR (Hit up Tow, RegimeTR, other names that elude me for an invite)

I think I've been playing too much PS2, while on the way to work I was trying to "spot" a plane in the sky that looked like a Reaver...

Just want to post some thoughts as i just purchased a new computer and started playing.
I jumped in as TR on Jeager, but i haven't contacted any forum peeps because i wanted to learn the game a bit.

I had a bunch of station cash on two sony accounts left over from eq years back. Anyhow if you do as well, don't spend it, yet learn the game a bit. The station cash allows you to buy weapons but not the certs that make you an actual better player. However once you do figure out whats good to buy i recommend actually using sc and saving certs for upgrades. I bought the two combo packages and a few things on sale. While i don't regret the purchases, once i learned the game i would have rather just bought 4 or 5 weapons full price, knowing exactly what i wanted. Anyhow it was still free for me.

If you are just getting started try to read the planetside 2 thread on Something awful game forums. I found it more informative then the videos linked from the client. If you play Terran Republic, just start out as a medic and make sure you get the trv cycler weapon. Its the most newb friendly weapon in the game.

You can learn the game much easier being a medic and your gun is awesome allowing you to get some kills while you begin. Otherwise use Heavy assault in close range battle making sure to press f button for your shields as you engage your target. Dumbfire the rockets into groups of infantry it works better on them then on vehicles, unless you sneak up behind a tank. You could try engineer like i did but you should start with the other two classes first i think.
Try to stay away from the zergs its almost impossible to learn the game in them unless you have the best machine/graphics card AND internet connection. Start by warping inot the smaller battles at substations or spawning at a sunderer in a small battle.

Farm certs in Biolab battles using a max, but you need an engineer backing you up AND you must buy a right handed infantry weapon. I bought the right handed and left handed fully automatic weapons and i'm a death machine. Also try the other factions, to be honest i found the starter weapons for the other two factions easier to target and kill with.

More to come, have fun!

PS. just ordered a 2gb Geoforce 660 card, it came with 50$ free planetside sc from newegg!

Yea, since I have most the guns I want already I just wait on deals/sales to get the stuff that remains. Check everyday to see what the daily sale is and once a week for the weekly bundles.

I saw they enabled Physx again a few days ago but I only have an ATI card, I think I'm going to read into running a second nvidia card just to run Physx because it looks awesome!

I posted this on the official forums:

So since the latest hotfix, I can play fine for 20,30 minutes (or less if it's a big battle), then suddenly whenever I shoot someone, or get shot, it takes literally 10 seconds to register.

Here's a quick and dirty clip of a perfect example. I got lucky on a pod drop and noone noticed I was in the tree. Assuming other people have this happen, this would explain why I still die despite ducking behind cover.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mq_a8jBxy4I

Anyone else have this happen?
