Koster was also part of the Crowfall team for awhile, we all know how that went.
I swear I remember him hyping it up but now any time it's mentioned he insists he wasn't actually involved, just giving it shout-outs.

The thing that always gets me with these new MMORPG efforts is that they always create the wheel from scratch. There's been hundreds of failed MMORPGs in the past. You would think that some of those companies would want to recoup some of their losses by selling or leasing their engines that they spent many years developing to start up companies.

I mean yeah I get the fact that a ton of it will be throw away, but parts of the networking, server, and client code should be re-usable for any MMORPG. Instead of re-inventing the particle system, shaders, etc, use what some other company spent many millions making, and spend your time on creating new art, game rules, and content.

Not all failed MMORPGs are obviously good candidates for this kind of thing, but there are some out there where it wasn't the technology under the hood that caused them to fail, but rather it was the direction of the content, game rules/mechanics, and marketing that caused the game to not succeed.

If I owned a company that spent 50-100 million on a MMORPG that ultimately failed, I would take that fucker and turn it in to a MMORPG game engine that I would lease out to everybody and their dog in order to recoup as much money from it as possible. In fact, I would go one step further, and make it free to use for learning and small projects in order to indoctrinate young developers in college who might then take those skills of working with my engine to a future company that would buy my license for their big triple A game.

I just don't get the whole, hey we wasted 100 million dollars, and failed. Oh well. Fuck it. See ya later guys. You're fired.
Game engines are a dime a dozen. Want to know why? That's all they are worth.

Every new MMO is the same exact thing at this point. They should just constantly reskin the same code. Everyone is publishing an open world pve pvp social solo grindy no-grind game with on the rails freeform questing.

One day someone will come up with something new but right now they just jam as many buzzwords in to a concept as possible and they all turn out to be unfun pieces of garbage.
That's most games these days. Copy someone else's work that they copied from someone that they copied from someone. "We need another crafting/survival/builder/buzzword game!" of the week, then it gets made, fails, and they sit around wondering why.

They all look the same, play the same...because they are all the same. The only thing that changes is the name on the box.

What's going to change? Nothing. Nothing at all.

Wait... you guys are saying a Koster game is going to be samey?

SWG was really odd. I wouldn't even call it good, but It didn't really play like anything else.

Then again, and maybe this is just me being old, but it does seem like everything that could be done has been done. I had ideas running out my eyeballs when I was 20, but no skill to make it. Now I can make anything but struggle to find something I want to make.

SWG was fun for some people (like myself). Exploring worlds, getting new pets and bots, mining resources, shops, etc etc etc. What other game is going to allow me to have a 30ft high turtle pet that shakes the ground as it moves? It remains a sad "what if" among the many games I've played. They really fucked that game up.

BUT - what I really wanted to say, and this isnt throwing shade because I liked the idea... was that it reminds me of the old footage from EverQuest: Next. Like destructible environment etc. Now Im just curious how "multiplayer" is it going to be? Is it going to be small amount of players, 24? 36? etc. to a server? Or is it truly going to be "massively" and if it is massively, then I really... really... want to know how theyre going to get all that terrain data out to each client without the connection needing to be fiber. I mean, Im all for it. But its not like we've forgotten how and why EQ:N was dead in the water, among other reasons.

We should be so lucky.

That said, I still have the feels for what Tabula Rasa was at the end of the open beta, when it was an actually fun game with potential overflowing out of every orifice. The lack of decent space MMORPGs other than SW:TOR after all these years means there is a market fully ready to exploit. Wildstar could have done that, but they decided to be reskinned WOW instead.

I got in the alpha but haven't played for more than an hour total. It's all scheduled tests that run periodically for a few hours. I guess I can see the appeal but I don't think it's my thing. For a game going for a cartoony non graphic intensive aesthic, it sure does run like shit atm. From what I've played, the combat has all the depth of an Atari game - I literally just strafed around mindlessly firing a blaster?

I've played around during multiple tests and this game, right now, is about as raw as it gets. It's almost in "proof of concept" stage still.

That said, the way crafting works, how ANYTHING works...they do not hold your hands at all. You have to learn and teach yourself everything, every recipe, every item. Tutorial? Get fucked, figure it out.

I can't even say the bones are good at this point because it's missing most of those too. Hopefully, it'll be good. A lot of what they have planned sounds nice, but it's so far off right now from any sort of true feeling of how the game will be, its hard to tell what will come of this. Hopefully something good...but probably not.
