Have you put any new eggs in an incubator? The half distance wouldn't apply to any you already had going. Not sure if you will get double candy for ones you already had going, either, I wasn't paying attention.

I haven't played since like the 2nd month after launch and my Dragonite and Lapras are still wrecking fools at gyms.
So far any of the fully evolved gen 1 'mons seem just fine for gym battles provided you line your types up properly. Except for the evolved Chancy, fucking hell is that thing a blood pig.
Is there any reliable way to farm potions besides just spamming pokestops? Seems like they give 9:1 pokeballs to any other kind of item.

Tyranitar, Golem, Espeon, Alakazam, Gengar, Machamp, Hariyama, Vaporeon, Dragonite, Gyarados, Flareon, Jolteon, Omastar, Charizard, Venusaur.All viable in favorable conditions (weather boost, super effective) with the proper movesets. If you get a team of Machamps with Dynamic Punch, you will tear through every Blissey you find in a gym. With a good psychic team you can solo a Machamp raid.
