Yeah usually the whole "post pictures of mediocre-looking black women" meme is in response to Hollywood DEI-hiring ugly actresses. Doesn't really fit here, unless what you want is super sexy young looking Predators. I'm sure you guys can find that on some R34 sites though.

I haven't seen it mentioned in the thread though it's explained in a lot of places, but this Predator is supposed to look a bit different because he's the runt of the litter, and was exiled by his clan. The plot of the film is him choosing to reclaim his honor and the acceptance of his clan by choosing the deadliest hunting grounds for his first hunt. I think he looks fine in 99% of the trailer shots we see, but of course every article picks the same thumbnail where it looks kind of awkward mid-roaring. You can also see more "normal" looking Predators in the trailer, so obviously the director didn't suddenly forget what their familiar look is supposed to be.

Also lots of people gatekeeping what a Predator is supposed to look like by showing the Jungle Hunter's face in the original Predator, ignoring the fact that almost every Predator looks way different in each movie : City Hunter looked very different already, then there was an entire new sub-species with the Berserker in Predators, then they had giant Predators in The Predator (but that one was pretty terrible for the most part), and then Feral Predator in Prey looked altogether very different again with a completely different facial structure. If anything, it's cool to explore a bit more about various clans or cultures on Yautja Prime (and the director of Prey and Badlands seems to be very invested in Predator lore).

I am not gatekeeping what a predator should look like; I am flat out stating that this one's face done in complete CGI looks like dogshit.

I wasn't pointing to anyone in this thread, just saying what I've seen online about how "that's not a predator at all".

I'm ambivalent on full CGI versus full practical effects.

On the one hand I love the original Stan Winston Predator effects and tend to prefer practical effects in general versus everything CGI, on the other hand CGI allows for some more expressions on the face or other parts, such as the throat and face vibrating in this trailer when he's roaring, which is something the old designs couldn't do, there was a lack of movement on the facial prosthetics at the time.

I think the best should be a large part of prosthetics and practical effects with some subtle touches of CGI for extra effects or specific moments, which is probably something they're going to do at least in part in the film, but some scenes look fully CGI yeah..

I have no idea how you can watch movies from the last 30 years and think that CGI is superior for characters in any way. Outside of Gollum in LOTR, every single CGI insert has felt like a poorly placed compromise because they just didn't want to put in the effort of finding a way to do it practically. They always say that it is cheaper to do CGI; but go watch a season of Face/Off from SyFy and tell me that limited budgets do not drive creative magic. Hell, you can find videos where the predator in Prey was a guy in a suit with a mask, but they used CGI to add little details. That compromise worked out great; so why change it so drastically here, to such lackluster effect?

You're saying exactly what I'm saying, the best way is practical/prosthetics with CGI touch-ups. Full practical is quite restrictive for some outlandish designs in most cases (though there is some superb work out there by talented make-up artists and prop designers), and full CGI tends to fall into the uncanny valley or looks like PS2 cinematics unless it's done spectacularly well, so yeah we agree.
