They work, just very badly. The one we bought caused us to panic when it took like 30 minutes to find the heartbeat. We would have been in the ER except that my wife could feel movement. They are huge pieces of shit, terrible purchase imo. We never used it again after that one night.
They work fine, even my wife's OB was using a cheapo version at appointments because it all comes down to understanding what position the baby is in. When they are super tiny and you can't even feel them kick, then it's hard to find their heartbeat. They generally do not like the Doppler though. Our twins were always moving away from it or kicking at it.

had 10wk appt yesterday - doctor found the HB just fine - around 160 bpm. NT scan scheduled for 4 January. Biggest symptom I have right now is burping. Its completely insane. My husband says that he's heard me burp more in the last 2.5 weeks than he has in 6 years - and he was out of town all last week. Asked the doc if there was anything I could take like beano or something she's like yeah you can try but no. Second biggest (literally) symptom...nipples are sore as fuck and huge. Boobs are slightly bigger than they were pre pregnancy....areolas are only slightly bigger but christ in a cartoon WTF nipples.

Eya - sorry to hear about the M/S - mine didn't start either until like 2 weeks ago which I thought was weird too - I was like wtf this late in the first trimester? You know whats getting me through it now? Candy canes. Haven't eaten those things in YEARS and now I'm always sucking on one. But I'm almost always throwing up in the morning at this point - my stomach acids only. *shrug*

I always liked hearing the heartbeat. Sounds like you're inside a UFO or something.

So my best friend found out Wed (she's 10 weeks ahead of me) that she's having a boy. All the old wives tales said girl. She wanted to eat sweets only (she is not a sweets person), she had dreams it was a girl, chinese birth chart said girl, mayan even/odd thing said girl.......everyone around her thought girl.....she wanted a girl.....

Only her husband, her aunt and cousin thought boy.

She's happy of course regardless. Now she told me that I must have a boy LOL. We're waiting to find out the sex until labor/delivery which drives her crazy...its going to be 7 months of WHY WONT YOU JUST FIND OUT??? We personally don't care what the sex is. We're planning on having more than just one and obviously since its our first we have more chances. I think they were planning on maybe only having one though. We'll see. I think its a girl based on old wives tales and dreams but obviously that's complete BS.

She also found out she has placenta previa, which means the placenta is low instead of high where its supposed to be. If it doesn't move up over the next few months it means basically mandatory c-section for her.

So for Christmas the baby gave my husband a Pentax K-30 and a diaper dude bag with an orange dragon. There was other stuff that I got him but this was the baby related stuff.

For Christmas the baby gave me blood laced vomit. Yay! LOL

That's all fine and dandy, but I think the question on everyone's mind is how are your nipples?

Perusing this thread initially felt like being forced to read Redbook magazine at the doctor's office because someone else grabbed the National Geographic and Time. An odd and worrying compulsion to read further has now resulted in me closely monitoring this thread for tales of lady farts, burps, and sore nipples.

Booked my appointment at the shrink today, wish me the best.

My wife's nipples are now like 3/4 of an inch long from 4 weeks of breastfeeding. Strange as fuck. Baby needs to stop sucking on my damn tits =/ Especially since daddy ain't getting none.

(just for you Cut)

Speaking of....just picked up some breast pads from Amazon. No change really though in terms of nips. Least that I've noticed. Still big. Still puking in the am - mostly water and stomach acids, followed by about 5 mins of dry heaving. Sometimes there's traces of blood, sometimes not. Doing better on getting protein into the diet but I'm still losing weight for some reason *shrug*. About 12lbs lost now.

Found out a good friend who watched another good friends kids (paid) is pregnant with her second - basically childcare has been 100% solved probably at this point. Awesome timing is awesome.

Definitely have a small bump - can feel the uterus above the pelvic bone at this point. So ready to be done with 1st trimester. Counting the days until 2 week from tomorrow.

My wife just hit 12 weeks yesterday and she's lost almost 15 pounds so far.
Heh good to know its not just me! Has she had a lot of morning sickness? Any food aversions or cravings?

PS I love the fact that you were already like one of my favorite people on here being a Chicago foodie and nice guy to boot but I think its crazy awesome on top of it that you and your wife are expecting your first at the exact same time we are. I'll have to snag your address so I can send you stuff if I find any foodie baby things when it gets a bit closer to July.

@ ToeMissile - thanks for the link! I'm going to be in Chicago next summer and this might be a good idea in case of cold or snow!

Unless you are going to be taking your baby hiking in the mountains, you'll never need one of those bunting suit things. They are bulky, hot, and make it difficult to fit them into carseats. Most people won't have their kids that young outside in the winter except for to and from a car. Here in VA, we just use blankets. We even bought one of those things that fit over carseats, but never use it. I do realize that Chicago in winter is literal hell on Earth so it is a bit different, but I wouldn't spend the money on something like that, you'll just end up regretting it and unable to unload it on craigslist a year from now.

I live in the land of cold and ice and I agree with Chaos, those things are a giant pain in the ass. I used on eon my first and that was it, after that it was a warm coat and a shit ton of blankets and a cover for the car seat. Works just as well, if not better imo and it's way less of a pain in the ass to get them secured into their seat.

Her morning sickness has not been that bad. She has only thrown up once I think, but it can get pretty debilitating at times. Luckily for her it seems to be the worst in the evening so she doesn't have to deal with it at work. She is constantly tired though and is usually asleep by about 8 or 9 every night.

She hasn't had many aversions but doesn't have that much of an appetite at all. Smells seem to be the worst for her. She can't be in the kitchen when anyone is cooking any kind of meat but she is fine with eating it usually. Christmas Eve/Day were pretty rough for her with all the cooking. As far as cravings go, Portillo's Chopped Salad has been about it. When she gets hungry and has an appetite, that is the one thing she always wants.

July is going to be a busy month for babies... you, my wife, Kate Middleton, and now Kim Kardashian!

I went to boot camp in Great Lakes in Dec of 2000. The blizzard actually delayed my flight in. I wouldn't recognize the area without a foot of snow on the ground. Fuck Illinois forever after that shit. It was like 20 below one day, we weren't allowed outside, shit was crazy.
