A ways back, I posted on the AC Odyssey thread that I'm at the point where I wish that Ubisoft would put the AC series to bed, and just make unrelated historical titles where you play as an iconic archetype for the time period. This game is just about the epitome of what I was talking about. This game goes beyond being an open-world game set in the Old West to being a straight-up Cowboy Simulator, and I'm loving it.

Now I just need a dozen other games in this vein, in other time periods, where you play as some sort of other historical 'adventurer' archetype. Give me triple-A simulators where you play as a knight errant, and a ronin, a longhunter/frontiersman, a viking, a pirate, and any of the thousands of variations of 'mercenary' that catches a dev's fancy.

I also wouldn't say no to a fantasy game designed like this. A RDR2-style Mage Simulator would be awesome.
You'd think Rockstar would have multiple teams all working on new shit like this. Making their billions. But hey, why try some thing new with your billions?

Got this game on Friday because I couldn't resist the hype.

Overall I think it's really good. I personally am not a fan of strict adherence to realism so there are points of this game that kind of drive me batty. But it's not horrible. Mostly item management (especially on hunting) and the need to travel great distances to get to people to offload stuff. The traveling is the part I hate the most. I go and ride for 5 minutes to play through some task, be it a mission or just something like hunting or what not, to only have to ride for 5-10 minutes more to offload the loot and stuff. I think the mistake I'm making is trying to make the camp my home base, where I think from now on I'm just going to rent a room in Valentine, and use the trains to get from point to point. Control layout is fine, but I'm still trying to get used to the timing. I actually prefer the standard over FPS (I like sprint on my X), but I need to find one where dead eye is not R3. Also, there are points where they want you to perform a task a certain way. Like I had to protect the camp's reverand from a dude, and I had a witness. They want me to shoot him when I was just trying to stick to my white knight ideals and just hog tie said witness, and I could not do it

I really wish more role playing games that want to go dialogue heavy would take a queue from this game. I love how they have a general antagonistic button and a positive button and they let shit kind of organically play out with some awesome voice acting and cinematography (have no idea how else to describe this). I usually hate slogging through dialoge trees in games but sitting around and shooting the shit in this game is really fun.

Almost through Chapter 2 and I really like it. However, I'm really getting tempted to be an asshole just so I have shit to do between points of travel, even if it is shooting lawmen and what not.

You can also pitch camp instead of having to rent a room. Also, are you talking about the first time you meet the reverand which intoduces poker? I don't remember having to shoot the witness. I think I just threatened him.

Another gripe, I couldnt figure out how to pick up weapons. lol I kept pressing L1 and nothing was happening. Then I realized it had to be a quick press. I missed out on two of the gunslinger guns because of it.

Oh shit... see I'm so used to "charisma" checks never working I didn't even bother. But holy fuck, I coudn't catch up with the guy to even get a lasso around him let alone threaten his ass.

I didn't even know you could pick up weapons to be honest. The only one I came across was a shitty double barrel in a cabin on one of the main missions. I really think the problem I have with gun play at this point is trying to use the repeater. I just think my style does not jive with it's style, so I'm going to give rifles a try. I also would like to figure out what resets my "load out." Is it just simply getting on your horse? Because I kind of do things ahead of time. IE if I'm setting out to go hunting, I load my bow, and repeater for self defense. And I'm sticking with that until I rest at camp then I'll set out on something else. But there are times where I hop off my horse, go to the weapon wheel and everything but my side arm are gone.

The controls feel like GTAV for me. I don't think much has changed. Then again, I finished GTAV on the PS4 a few months ago. Once you learn how to abuse the auto aim. Gun fights become way easier.

That's what I'm trying to figure out. I actually have not played a GTA since III (or San Andreas I think). I have it set to Wide now but I just don't get into enough gun fights to really properly test. The actual button layout part of them is totally fine, it's the nuance and timing I'm struggling with and if I could get an auto aim that works better that'd go a long way in helping for sure.

Can someone tell me what i am doing so when I swap out my custom outfit for my hobo bandit outfit when I commit crimes. When I swap back to the original custom outfit it has overwritten the second one and I can't fix this until I go back to camp.

Whatever you do, don't pick up any "worn" guns. They will stay with you forever, clogging up your weapon wheel with useless shit that you can't even sell. Even the gunslinger unique guns I somewhat regret as none of them compete with a modded version of the same gun. And all the other handguns are kind of pointless once you have a pair of schofields anyway.

There's nothing you can do about constantly having your rifle slots put away while riding. It happens all the time and there's no way to lock them.

Outfits have to all be saved individually at camp if they're not a canned set, even the one you're wearing. Then you have to equip them to your saddle too.

I also noticed this. I've accidentally looted some guns and I couldn't figure out how to sell or drop them.

Is there even a way?

I'm not kind of glad I haven't at this point.

Another question on hunting, because the more I think about it, the more I may be doing it completely wrong: is there any advantage to grabbing the entire carcass of an animal or is it enough to just skin it and loot it?

When looking comparing weapon stats in the weapon wheel, what is the difference between the white and the light gray sections? I thought originally it meant that was the weapon's capability after full mods, or it needed to be cleaned, but fully modded and cleaned guns still have the gray sections beyond the white. Am I just retarded and missed the easy explanation somewhere?

When does online/multiplayer unlock? I got tired of scrolling through bullshit clickbait trying to find the answer.

I actually turned this off out of frustration last night, switched over to Game of Thrones. I've been trying to do the Valentine to Rhodes in under 5 minutes challenge, and rediculous shit keeps happening in the process. Horse keeps getting hit by trains, ambushes, bucked off, etc. I love the game overall, but there's not one "thing" that I just have a blast doing. It's all kind of chore-like with a constant chug through the narrative.

Also, the poker games in St Denis are much more legit than other places. At the $1 games, it seems like the player has completely unrealistic odds. I hit three and four outters over 50% of the time. I don't have that great of a sample size for the St Denis $5 game, but it feels realistic so far.

Is there any rhyme or reason as to why weapons sometimes stay on my person, but other times return to my horse? I can't count how many fucking times I run half a mile from my horse, only to realize I don't have my bow or rifle and have to run back.

Nope.

There's a few carcasses you need for camp upgrades, otherwise they just sell for cash. Legendary ones are valuable enough to pick up, the rest I rarely bother with unless I'm real close to camp or a trapper.

I've wondered about this too. Horses have a similar issue where it looks like you can't actually fill the final grayed out bar, but if you encounter the person who wants a horse race twice you get a bonus that maxes it out. Not sure if there's something for guns that I just haven't come across yet.

Haven't seen anything more concrete than 'beta mid-November'.

After riding a short while you holster your rifles onto the horse but instead of just putting them away temporarily they get completely unequipped from your weapon wheel. There's no way to prevent it. It's extremely irritating, and you just have to get in the habit of re-setting up your guns before getting off your horse.

I can only figure that the start of a mission will reset your weapons for various reasons, or really any event of some kind. So you need to consciously re-equip what you want whenever you want to leave the horse.

Well, at least you don't die from measles, typhoid fever, cholera, and dysentery.

And yet here I am at work, more interested in planning out today's cowboy activities than actually doing any work.

I shot him once and he fell over, but didn't die. Gave me time to catch up and threaten him.
