I'm looking forward to this. The only Contra game I've ever played is Contra III on SNES. I forsee myself rage quitting multiple times in spectacular fashion.

You should not. It aged surprisingly well and is very enjoyable. I said it in the other thread, but I'll say it again: I recommend playing with the 30 lives code through the game several times and before you know it you will no longer need the code!

By the way, the pal version of the game uses robots instead of people and the japanese version of the game was on a custom cartridge that allowed more room for animated backgrounds and cut scenes between levels. I *think* the fact it used a custom cartridge makes it unplayable in some (all?) emulators. I'll try to find and play that version at some point during the month maybe...

I finally gave this a go last night. I got to the end of the second stage on my first try. The 3D perspective surprised me, but I really liked it. It looks very good for the NES.

It wasn't nearly as rage-inducing as I had anticipated. Of course, I'm sure each level is going to get progressively more infuriating. I'll keep plugging away at it old school style with no save states or cheats.

Is there any weapon that is considered universally better? When I get the spread shot in the first level I can start cruising through really easily. If I accidentally pick up a laser or flamethrower, shit gets much harder. Half the challenge seems to be avoiding the garbage weapons.

Spread is unquestionably superior for Contra and Super C. In Alien Wars it comes down to player skill, you'll see speed runners using the crush gun but if you don't have a level memorized down to the last pixel then the spread gun is probably still better for you.

So after beating original contra, with the 30 lives code I decided to try super c since I've never beaten that one. Super C seems way harder than contra. Aside from the fact there's only a 10 life code the stages seem harder. I had to use a continue to beat the first level a couple of times. Second stage is easier with spread. And right back tk difficulty spike in stage 3. Can't beat stage 4 run out of continues lol.

I'm still working on Contra without 30 lives code. I've only put in a combined 2ish hours in smaller chunks, but at this point I can easily cruise to the level 4 boss IF I manage to get spread. With spread I can blow through levels 2 and 3, and it's just the level 4 boss that has ended me. I've only given it a handful of tries, so I think I'll be able to get past him pretty soon.

It's crazy how different the game is with and without spread, though.

Beat Super C and on to contra force now. Going to go back through and see what beating them with the default weapon is like. Got to go for the challenge.

Nightmarishly difficult. Special weapons deal retarded amounts of damage compared to the default gun.
